Jumpers Notebook

Well well, the best part of racing is well and truly coming back. I have four for the season to follow, progressive handicapper types.

Bold Endeavour - He started off well over fences before disappointing in the Reynoldstown when he stopped way too quickly for that to be his true running. He got back on track in the Coral Cup when finishing fifth though. He went widest throughout that day, so I thought this was a very good run.

He backed this up with two excellent second placings in handicap hurdles. I see on Nicky Henderson's stable tour he might switch him back to fences this season as the priority, knowing he could always go back to hurdles if need be. He's rated 145 over fences, so he'll need to improve again to be competitive in good handicap chases, but I fancy he can improve, as a second season chaser. When watching him last season, bar the poor run in the Reynoldstown, I thought there was a lot to like about his attitude.

Opening Bid - A really improved chaser from Chris Down's yard. I backed him when he was second the other day. He then ran a few days later without me realising, albeit at very short odds, and absolutely hacked up. A sign of a rapidly improving horse or maybe just a horse in really good form. I can see him stepping up in grade over the winter and taking it in his stride. There's more class three's or even a class two in time with this horse.

Aramax - This horse won the Boodles Hurdle when trained by Gordon Elliott as a four year old in 2020. He went off the boil after that, but his form has picked up lately. He could be a force to be reckoned with this season in staying handicap hurdles off this type of mark, now with the Ben Haslam team training him for JP McManus. I am hoping he might pick up a big three mile handicap hurdle sometime this winter or next spring.

Off To A Flyer - He beat the aforementioned Aramax before Aramax went on to win a couple of races on the bounce. So my thinking looking at Off To A Flyer's profile, is if I'm right about Aramax, then it might also be wise to follow this unexposed Joe Tizzard horse off a really exploitable looking rating of 120.

Aramax is running today at Ayr in the 1.42. See if he can get back to winning ways.

Landed handicap hurdles at Cartmel and Uttoxeter in the summer and posted a respectable fourth of 8 in handicap at Cartmel (25.4f, soft) 70 days ago. One for the shortlist.

A maiden hurdle at Ayr wouldn’t normally give rise to great excitement, but PRIMOZ showed a change of gear today and his ptp form reads well, even though he was runner up on both outings. The winner of his first race was the 18 length winner next time out of a novice hurdle at Hexham (I know…) and both horses are now with Lucinda Russell. The horse in third on his next outing, Minella Rescue, is now a dual bumper winner. One to keep an eye on, I think.

Disappointing but all his best form is in the spring months, so I'll hold fire on backing him until March or April.

Aye, looked really good (with a couple of well thought of ones in the field, too). Apparently bought (150k) for chasing, so this hurdle run (and maybe others to come) was an impressive prep run for fences :)

Tall gelding who won a couple of times over hurdles last season for Michale Scudamore and showed aptitude for chasing when second of 5 in a novice at Worcester on stable/chasing debut. Open to improvement and makes plenty of appeal.

WON 5/1

THE KING OF RYHOPE, a point winner who was Grade 2-placed as a novice hurdler, jumped well in the main on this chasing debut, taking down a field of largely more experienced rivals. He still has plenty to learn and could rate a fair bit higher yet.RP

Running Balance: +2

Re-watching this morning was really impressed. Harry took a pull early on in the straight, he could've won that way more easily.

In the Air. Gary Moore 5yo who was reasonably highly tried as a juvenile last year. He had his first run over fences last Monday at Huntingdon and was second to a nice Emma Lavelle type (General Medrano) who was odds-on. In the Air jumped so well throughout and the front two pulled nicely clear of the third. General Medrano did travel better than In the Air so I wouldn't be against a step up in trip and the winner likely had a fitness advantage also.

I was interested in watching Whistle Stop Tour in the 12:45 at Carlisle today since he had beaten (in an Irish Point) Primoz who was so impressive at Ayr (see Grey’s post above https://www.talkinghorses.co.uk/for...mpers-Notebook&p=798539&viewfull=1#post798539) a couple of days ago. Ran ok in third, but the real eyecatcher was Johnnywho.Very impressive and won very easily indeed - a pretty good one, I think.

WON 5/4 - MOFASA made a sound chasing debut at Worcester behind Broadway Boy, who who has since been runner-up to Flooring Porter at Cheltenham. Producing a solid round of jumping, he stayed on willingly to go one better and is the type to make a very useful handicapper.RP

Won twice in this sphere as a novice for Laura Morgan and successful first 2 starts over fences for Nicky Henderson last season. Ended that campaign with a series of creditable efforts back hurdling, but no easy task under top-weight back from a break here.

A decent season starter, giving lumps of weight away. I think the 3M mile stretches his stamina a bit. I wonder will he be a Coral Cup horse for next March, the race he ran so well in at the last Festival. Time will tell.

This "progressive handicapper' has only been entered in the Rising Stars grade 2 novice chase at Wincanton on Saturday, hasn't he!

There was me thinking he'd next be seen in a class three handicap. What a carry on. Typical trainer decision.. Having said that, and despite the fact he has about a stone and a half to find on ratings, I'll have a little on each way.

3rd/11 4/1 - Bold Endeavour didn't fully settle in front under top weight, so this wasn't a bad effort off a 180-day break.

Winning pointer who made it 3-3 over hurdles when taking a 6-runner listed event at Perth (3m, good to soft) in April. Was upsides the eventual winner and going well when unseating 3 out on recent return/chase debut at Carlisle, and his mark for this handicap bow will probably be within reach.

Looked a different proposition as he made a winning start over fences after 6 months off in C&D novices' handicap a fortnight ago, jumping fine and impressive as he pulled clear. Surely better than a handicapper and the one to beat if improving on that as expected.

Dual hurdles winner who scored twice over fences over further here last season. Should be all the better for his recent Carlisle return in a stronger race and he's a player down in trip.

WON 5/6f - GIOVINCO, winner of all three of his novice hurdles, the latter in Listed company, was running a big race on his chasing debut at Carlisle before unseating his rider three out. Conceding plenty of weight to his three rivals here, he made amends in pleasing fashion, winning with something in hand. He looks a smart prospect prospect and seems a likely sort for the Brown Advisory Novices' Chase at Cheltenham in March for which he earned quotes from 12-1 to 20-1.RP

2nd 11/10f Master Chewy, who made a strong impression when jumping well and bolting up on his chasing debut over C&D last month, was 10lb higher here but that didn't deter punters who sent him off a short priced favourite. There was pre-race concern that the reduction in fences might not see him to best effect, but he did little wrong, simply succumbing to a determined rival late on. He shouldn't be long in bouncing back to winning ways.

2nd 11/4f - Ned Tanner, having his second run of the season, never got into a rhythm and didn't jump that fluently so left himself with plenty to do when they quickened for home. He did well to finish as close and remains an interesting one in handicaps like this.

Dual juvenile hurdle winner in 2021/22 who got back to winning ways in a Fontwell handicap (19.2f) in May. Excellent start over fences when second at Huntingdon on return 2 weeks ago, clear of rest, and surely has more to offer as a chaser.

Jeepers, creepers. How do you rate Jamie Moore as a jockey? Is there a figure low enough?
