Jumpers Notebook

He was my dark horse last year as I remembered standing (and chatting to) next to Rich Richie the season before at Cheltenham when he just got beaten. I thought then that they thought an awful lot of the horse and he struck me as though he was always going to make a lovely chaser. That was some performance today.

Fairly useful ex-French winning hurdler/chaser who showed bundles of enthusiasm back from 6 months off when second over fences at Wincanton (20f) 2 weeks ago. Worth siding with to build on that back up in trip. starstarstarstarstar

Won twice in this sphere as a novice for Laura Morgan and successful first 2 starts over fences for Nicky Henderson last season. Posted some good efforts back hurdling in the spring and made a solid return from 6 months off when third of 11 at Newbury recently, although Emitom was ahead in second.starstarstar

Runner-up both starts in Irish points in spring 2023. Bought for £150,000 after and looked a good prospect in making a winning hurdling debut at Ayr (2m) 3 weeks ago, quickening clear run-in. Sure to do better. starstarstarstar

Bold Endeavour - 5th/13 - Bold Endeavour again ran well without suggesting he has anything in hand from his current mark.

Primoz - sunk without trace

WON 7/4f - ENJOY YOUR LIFE, 4lb higher than when second over 2m4f at Wincanton on his recent return from six months/return to chasing, won nicely. There's a fair chance he can follow up.

Ended last season on the up with wins at Wincanton and Southwell and resumed with an excellent second of 7 in handicap chase here (18f, good, 9/2) 36 days ago. Big shout once more. starstarstarstarstar

Sometimes one just has something about him and you just know he is going to be top class.

Hughie Morrisons flashy Secret Squirrel fit the bill.

Very fresh he didn't really settle for the first miles and a half and was easy to back in running as most horses who are too keen early usually fold near the end.

his jumping was novicey and even a bit scary at times

During the race I thought he'd have to be very special to win after his early antics but wow!!

He quickened like only top class horses can and in ground softer than he had encountered before.

He might not yet be mature enough for the Supreme 66/1 available but it will take a very good horse to lower his colours this season.

2nd/6 6/4f - Thelasthighking, up 5lb, has now finished runner-up on both starts here this season, getting a little further back than ideal but keeping on. He may yet have more to offer.

Running Balance: - 11:50

WON 5/1

THE KING OF RYHOPE, a point winner who was Grade 2-placed as a novice hurdler, jumped well in the main on this chasing debut, taking down a field of largely more experienced rivals. He still has plenty to learn and could rate a fair bit higher yet.RP

Running Balance: +2

This race is working out well. From down the field Georges Saint won well at Ffos Las and Top of the Bill (who I might track, more research needed) stayed on well at Exeter last week.

Just one from last weekend. Amrons Sage was quite taking on his first run over fences for Nicky Sunday at Exeter He was second to Moriko de Vassy (pair pulled well clear) who was a squiggle merchant over fences last year before changing stables and he was ungodly well handicapped if you take his effort (where he jumped terribly) behind Notlongtilmay last Autumn at Wetherby literally. Exeter has a fair few fences in the home straight and Nico was trying to kick his mount clear before the fourth last. I feel natural progression and more patient ride and this horse will win a race or two.

Off mark in Irish points and comfortably followed up in a bumper at Wetherby 8 months ago. Probably found the test too much after doing plenty of running to get into things when runner-up on hurdling debut at Stratford (22f, heavy) recently and every chance she can go one better. starstarstarstarstar

WON 4/7f - COCO MADEMOISELLE, beaten at odds-on on her hurdles debut over 2m6f at Stratford at the beginning of the month, got her career firmly back on track with a fluent success, dropped in distance. A winner of an Irish point in January and successful on her only bumper outing at Wetherby in April, she's a mare brimmed full of potential.RP

Running Balance: - 11:00

A pretty good horse on the flat, I thought Paradias looked to have something about him at Lingfield today.

Willmount

Is this Henderson's next superstar?

Impressed me enough to have a nibble at 16s for the Supreme

Looked the part alright

Haven't they got some JP owned ex French thing that is meant to be the new kid on the block.

Looks like it's Jeriko Du Reponet:D

Question is Which one goes Supreme and which one goes 2 1/2 miler?

Jeriko looked like he could have gone round again today so 2 1/2 for him Supreme for Willmount

Looked good didn’t he, with Nico not moving a muscle. Not sure the competition amounted to much, though.

Simonsig?

Yeah, but name another one, Darren.

It's just not a race he targets very often, and he has had multiple Supreme runners a few times in the last few seasons (Constitution Hill/Jonbon, Shishkin/Chantry House, Altior/Buveur D'Air).

Much improved since switching to chasing, scoring on debut at Aintree (15.8f) before good second of 9 in handicap over same C&D 21 days ago, clear of rest (only 6 of the scheduled 12 fences jumped). 6 lb higher now but likely has more to offer yet. starstarstarstarstar

2nd 4/6f - Master Chewy, runner-up at Aintree to Djelo, who won on the first day of this meeting, was beaten at 4-6 but this was still a solid run off 6lb higher in a better grade. Held up this time, he jumped well again but couldn't quite peg back the more experienced winner.RP

Back on track when signing off last term with success in an Ayr maiden (24.3f) in April and better than bare result when midfield in 20-runner Cheltenham handicap (21f, soft) on return 2 weeks ago, losing place when badly hampered 2 out. Remains one to be interested in. starstarstarstarstar

4th/10 10/1 - Off To A Flyer ran better than the result on reappearance and this was more like it, keeping on as though he'll be suited by a return to 3m.RP

Alan King must be pleased with the return to action today at Newbury of North Lodge after a season off. Ran pretty well then got a bit tapped for toe when push came to shove, only to finish very strongly into third. Better things beckon.

A poorly judged ride IMO with the horse being given too much to do. I’m sure Sam wishes he could have another go

Sean O'Keefe must be kicking himself. He absolutely over done it on Conyers Hill. Stone last it was almost like he wasn't off

If he had come round them instead of trying to thread him through the eye of a needle he would ave gone very close to winning.

I have a Monbeg to put in this week but not the obvious one, even though he's a lock for the Welsh National - Monbeg Park I thought showed a lot of promise at Thurles last Thursday in a very hot beginners. He's a big strapping chasing type who'll be much better suited to more galloping tracks and a step up in trip. I have to say tracking Irish chasers is a test of patience. Last season I tracked three from early on in their chasing careers when they caught my eye - Mahler Mission on New years Eve at Punchestown, Brides Hill (not her first chase start, the one where she ran against Tellmesomethingirl) and Solness from when he was behind Saldier at Thurles. This weekend they all ran in their first ever handicaps. The objective behind tracking these horses isn't just to wait till the day they run in handicaps as they can pay their way before then but the programme Solness was given had me nixing him from my alerts way before he won at the weekend. Lesson learned.

The other horse I've added is Persian Time who was second to Djelo at Newbury on Friday. Another big horse I always think Newbury is a tough ask for a chasing debutant and this lad wasn't foot perfect by any means but he showed enough to pique my interest for future races - particularly if Nicky runs him at Ascot or Kempton as he did shift to the right on a few occasions.

Thought Persian Time had something about him and nearly went into my notebook - he’s in now :)

Low-mileage 7-y-o who displayed fairly useful form over hurdles last term and improved to make a winning return/handicap chase debut at Chepstow (19.5f) in October, seeing off a resilient rival (pair clear). Underfoot conditions fine and respected with more to come.

race abandoned
