Jumpers Notebook

Jeepers, creepers. How do you rate Jamie Moore as a jockey? Is there a figure low enough?
He’s absolutely dire! I watch him hoping for some improvement but it never gets any better. He actually puts horses on the floor by his poor placement going into a jump. I actually think he was the reason for Goschen ending up like he has....he looked a serious horse and while I appreciate that the last fence incident at Cheltenham wasn’t 100% his fault, he may have been a contributing factor.

Dual juvenile hurdle winner in 2021/22 who got back to winning ways in a Fontwell handicap (19.2f) in May. Excellent start over fences when second at Huntingdon on return 2 weeks ago, clear of rest, and surely has more to offer as a chaser.

Although the RP analysis goes along with euro that the race came too soon, I think the general description of th race is the more pertinent- In touch with leaders, not fluent 4th, prominent after 5th, lost position 5 out, dropped to last after 4 out, mistake 3 out, soon detached, pulled up after 2 out (op 3/1). All that back and forth, lack of fluency, losing position etc I think points up that if anything was in control of him it wasn’t Jamie Moore. Not sour grapes, I didn’t have bet.

Despite having arms like pincushions I’ve succumbed to the dreaded Covid. I’ll try to keep this thread going, but feeling pretty lousy.

Best wishes, Barj.

I hope my selections for this thread haven't made you feel any worse!

Off To A Flyer entered for Friday. Come on!

Sorry to hear this. Make sure you do as little as possible even when you are recovered as it seems to have less of a lasting effect. I was pretty bad and couldn’t move for five days even going next door to the bathroom. Worse than the two times I have had bad flu. Lucozade, paracetamol and Heinz Tomato soup.

Had a productive 2022 over hurdles, winning 4 times, and he shaped well on his chase debut when second of 4 in handicap at Ludlow (20f, good) 36 days ago, just failing. Tongue strap back on and since had a wind op. Leading claims.

If you can stomach it, boiling milk with onions, butter and pepper has few flu remedies to match it.
I made the mistake of adding some orangeade/ fanta once and curdled the lot; that finished me with that particular cure I'm afraid.
Hot bath with epsom salts and a nice whiskey on the rocks; stay soaking until the ice melts is a lovely alternative.
The only downside for some is that Epsom is a flat only racecourse.

Sure Touch was 3rd/9 5/1 - Sure Touch, who's undergone wind surgery, wasn't quite as fluent as the winner up the straight but jumped well in the main to record a fair effort.RP.

I thought his stumble after two out finished him off, although he was beginning to feel it at that stage in any event.

Has won this handicap for the last 2 seasons off similar marks (latest race re-scheduled and ran in January). No show last 3 starts but now 2 lb below that last winning mark and no surprise to see a revival. Big player.

Highly tried on back of novice hurdle wins and defied 12-month absence to score at Taunton (16.5f) in March. Took an immediate step forward sent chasing when landing 3-runner handicap at Newton Abbot (16.3f, heavy) and is open to further improvement.

Take care of yourself Bar.

Couple caught my eye last week. The Beginners at Fairyhouse at the beginning of the week was really interesting. I have Sandor Clegane in my ap portfolio for the Festival and I was pleased with his first run over fences, he jumped well and just found the trip way too short. Pinkerton struck me as a horse of interest going forward with other Beginners races and handicaps down the line in mind. Imagine and Sandor set off forcing the pace with Pinkerton and the stupidly named Inotheway... etc trailing them a few lengths behind. Pinkerton jumped better than the JP in the main and was asked to chase the eventual winner as they entered the straight. He got tired and was caught for second by the JP towards the end of the race but I thought his effort to close earlier in the race told in the end and I like him going forward.

The other horse who went into the tracker was Enjoy your Life from Wincanton on Saturday. I'm a bit hesitant with this one as historically I've never got Venetia right but his run behind Huelgoat was too eye catching to ignore - they pulled well clear of the third in a decent looking heat and I felt that the jockey on the second set sail for home way too soon - the horse jumped and travelled well and imo there was no need for his pilot to be rowing away so far from home. He's gone up 4lbs for this run but 114 looks very workable

Thx everyone - damn thing is proving hard to throw off.

Thought Panjari looked promising yesterday. They got him calmed down this time and he won easily enough despite pretty ropey jumping. Lot more to come?

JPR One was very unlucky to come down after such a round of jumping. A cert next time?

Walk in Clover I thought ran a nice ran to finish third today. Settled out the back presumably to settle and give a confidence boost after unseating last time, was never going to catch the winner but ran on to take third.

…….JPR One was very unlucky to come down after such a round of jumping. A cert next time?…...

Yes, thought he was a cert this time and had a maximum+ bet, so very costly. My last maximum+ bet before that was Hurleronthedtch a week or so ago, he was even further clear when he fell at the last. On both occasions I was busy counting my money as they approached the last - fatal.

The RP are asking the question How much does El Fabiolo have to fear from Jonbon?

Was always my hope he would be as good as his brother Douvan who for me is still the best horse WPM ever trained.

Unfortunately Douvan went the wrong was after his accident and was never the same again.

Perhaps Jonbon can go the other way and he certainly looked the best in the Schloer I have ever seen him.

Granted he was odds on but the way he quickened was far more impressive than in previous outings.

The QMCC may not be the open and shut case punters think

Smart ex-French hurdler who impressed when landing Cork novice hurdle in April. Off 7 months. Makes chase debut. Trainer going well. Interesting debutant. starstarstarstarstar

WON 4/9f - MISTER POLICEMAN, an impressive winner from a good stable yardstick in a hurdle race at Cork in April, promised much. While he did deliver, it was hard work in the end. He is not the biggest horse in the world, and while he was very safe over his fences, he never really seemed to have a real cut at them like his stable companion did. In the end his class brought him through, but the impression afterwards suggested a lot more was expected. He looks sure to improve, but his trainer might well want to get more experience into him before trying him in Graded company.RP

Promising sort. Useful winner at 15f over hurdles. Third of 11 in novice chase (5/1) at this C&D (heavy) on debut over fences 17 days ago. Big shout. starstarstarstar

3rd 3/1 - Pinkerton followed up a good run here earlier in the month and he should find a winnable opportunity. His late work was good and he probably would have been closer with a straight jump at the last. He could well be one to go for a good handicap chase in the new year at about this trip.

Physically imposing sort who was unbeaten in 2 bumper runs and maintained 100% record despite the race not being run to suit when landing 11-runner Aintree maiden hurdle (20f) on return in October. Highly likely there's a good deal more to come. starstarstarstarstar

4th/4 8/11f - Inthewaterside settled better ridden from the front over this shorter trip but didn't try and stretch his field and was readily outpaced after the second-last. He was sent off at short odds again, so is evidently highly regarded by his top stable and it may pay to forgive this.RP (disappointing)

Won twice in this sphere as a novice for Laura Morgan and successful first 2 starts over fences for Nicky Henderson last season. Posted some good efforts back hurdling in the spring and made a solid return from 6 months off when third of 11 at Newbury recently, although Emitom was ahead in second.starstarstar

Runner-up both starts in Irish points in spring 2023. Bought for £150,000 after and looked a good prospect in making a winning hurdling debut at Ayr (2m) 3 weeks ago, quickening clear run-in. Sure to do better. starstarstarstar
