The 2000 Guineas (and beyond)

Infuriating when you're right about the form and get two EW bets done by a 33/1 chance!

Winner looks very very promising

Interesting post-race comments that they went slow to halfway then sprinted. The final time will also therefore be interesting.

Were it not for the hype, you'd say SNA ran a proper Derby prep.

I don't suppose I'll get 20/1 for Epsom they way I did when The Minstrel got beat in the Guineas. I just have to hope they do a Jim Bolger and put it about that he won't run until the eve of the race so that I can get 120.

I find it difficult to conclude it wasn't a good race. Take the winner out and the next two were miles clear in their trial and they've beaten a wide-margin Craven winner. And SNA wasn't that far behind.

It might just have been a very special race.

Wouldn't get too down on the race just because the favourites were beaten - Makfi had form there for all to see, was unbeaten, ridden by a top jockey and had won a recognised Guineas trial easily when half fit.

Took some big prices about the horse earlier in the week and put him up to a few friends but still fairly surprised the horse won.

Well done Martin, I know for a fact this isn't after-timing as you told me this morning.

Canford and Dick put up a sensational time in the Greenham and I knew the prices were wrong and the pair of them will be very decent horses this year.

Trainer Aidan O'Brien said: "We're not disappointed with the performance and I suppose we'd have liked to have seen an even, strong run race for him.
"Johnny (Murtagh) just said he jumped and they did a hack canter for the first half of the race, and that's not taking anything away from the winner or any other horse in the race.
"But obviously ideally for our horse we would have liked an evenly-run mile as we were using this as a stepping stone to the Derby at Epsom.
"We trained him all year with the Classics in mind. It was easy going for a Derby trial but he was working so well and his times were so good - as good as all the milers that we've had.
"That's why we decided to let him take his chance in the Guineas and when you come for a Classic like this they usually go a pace, but obviously we didn't put anything in to go an even building pace in front, which we often do.
"Johnny just said they hacked to halfway and then sprinted and then he started staying on again at the end.
"We weren't winding him up for a mile as we were thinking of the rest of the year and didn't want to light him up too much.
"We're happy with the horse."

I missed the earlier races so only noticed it during the Guineas but the ground looked awful to me. They were kicking lumps off the top of it. Can't imagine any of them particularly liked it. Winner really could be anything. His old connections must have had an awful feeling in the pit of their stomachs when he hit the front. Sounds like Ascot is the plan?

because if the first time is reflective of the ground ..which if it isn't then the ground must be firm..which it isn't..then i think you will find the guineas is about 5lb below your last 10 year average..and the average isn't exceptional

I bet Tregoning is spitting tacks! Had a tenner e/w on XTENSION, as did a friend, but I don't think that Laddies are going to cough up for 4th place, which is disappointing. Just called the owner John Hetherington, on third bottle of champagne with non-owning friends in Newmarket, who says, "not bad for a little 'un from Brighton, is it?" £15,000 bargain horse - as were all the first four, really. Just shows it can still be done in the face of the very highest-priced beasts.

what has the time of the Greenham got to do with it?..if early was slow today then overall is not going to be fast..looks like early was slowish to me

Well obviously! I was making the point that two very fast horses finished 2nd and 3rd. There was a slow pace today so the time isn't going to be special but you need to see the card!

Canford and DT put a group one time up in the Greenham last time.
I think you have to be careful about making such categorical statements, though.

On this occasion, they've run big races and therefore can be said to have justifued your conclusion, but look at it another way:

My time ratings say DT (and therefore CC too) was 22lbs faster than the winner of the opener, Colonel Carter, which emerged with a RPR of 86.

It was 24lbs faster than Fair Trade, another of today's opponents, who got a RPR of 87.

It was 12lbs faster than Fred Darling winner Puff (RPR 109).

In order, DT could therefore be said to be worth a rating of 108, 111 or 121.

None of those makes it a G1 horse.

However, what do we now make of Colonel Carter in the light of today's result? If DT is a G1 horse, worth 126, can we say Colonel Carter is a 104 horse, in which case he might well be a handicap snip soon.

Or is he Lindop reincarnate?

EC1 - who's making excuses for XTENSION? You're havinalarf - at 25-1? I don't see anyone on here who put him up for a win. I don't, come to think of it, see anyone on here who put anything that placed up for a win, either.

not necessarily..first race was very good marker..2nd not so..3.40 also a good marker now as it doesn't alter GA as pointed to by first race

i regularly use GA's for going assesment after one or two races..by watching the race and seeing the speed figure you soon get an idea how fast going is

i thought extension had a good chance mesen..hence why i backed it at 30.0...weren't meaning owt wrong..just thought might have had a good chance of winning

Looking forward to seeing Elusive Pimpernel over further. Maybe not at Epsom since he's a big horse who might not handle it, but 10f in the Eclipse might be right up his street.
