Hughes is reported as saying that Canford Cliffs did not really handle the dip but Makfi looked to me just to find more when CC challenged.
DT was formidable on soft ground last year and could be hard to beat in the I 2000 rain or shine.
I think both Dick Turpin and Canford Cliffs will be 7 furlongs horses.
And yet if Canford was ridden more aggressively (like he did get the mile) he may well have won. The dip seemed to catch him out (as Ardross mentions), but surely the St James's Palace rather than the Jersey will be his target now.
Whereas DT must surely go for the Irish Guineas.
I personally think if he was ridden more handy he would have finished weaker - the slowly run mile was his best chance.
I'm pretty sure he stays but he's not nearly as good as they thought he was after Royal Ascot last year - at least he won't be at a mile.
I don't see any of those behind Makfi reversing the result over a mile, nor am I yet convinced that CC gets a true run mile.
Canford Cliffs reminds me a bit of Dutch Art.
Anyone know when the next declaration stage is for the Irish Guineas?
I'm planning on having a lumpy bet on Steinbeck for this. I fancy we didn't see the best miler of the generation on saturday, although Mafki won't line up in Ireland so it won't matter too much.
Anyone else see Malcolm Heyhoe's analysis of the race on RPTV? His Weekender columns are usually good but he has totally got the wrong end of the stick here. Absolute drivel.
