Gowran Park 5.50

Turret Rocks proved too good for the favourite True Solitaire, winning with a bit in hand.

Chepstow 6.10

Tasleet had no problem landing the odds of 8/15; Sir M.Prescott's Bear Faced put up a much improved performance, completely un-fancied @ 50/1 he made a sluggish star but made headway throughout and kept on for second, shirley a future winner??

Today

A quiet day as far as i am concerned with only interest in two of the five races.

Thirsk 2.00

Three runners for first season sires. Two for Lilbourne Lad - Imshi's Little Bro, second in a seller on his last run and Mecca's Missus, a good second in a moderate Thirsk maiden last time. Zoffany is represented by Saxon Gold, green when beaten 15 lengths in an ordinary Redcar maiden on debut.

Kempton 7.15

FSS Poet's Voice is represented by the debutante Alzebarh.

A sire that I closely followed for 2013 and 2014 and this is normal based on previous years.....

2013 - Just 3 runners in GB to the end of June, with the 1st runner on the 3rd June.
2014 - Think we had to wait until 18th of July for the 1st 2yo runner last year (Can not get on RP to check)

Generally they seem to be slow developers and usually do not start to appear until the 7f races are on the calender (June).

Not a sire I would consider in 2yo races at the moment and would wait until September before considering with a minimum trip of 7f and ground no worse than good.

Expect to see less Sea The Stars two year olds on the race course as his manager is preferring staying mares to speed mares if my neighbour Missunited owner is to be believed.
On the FSS discussion the leading FSS are at a par winners wise with the past few years for this time of the year.
The fact that the top milers Frankel and Excelebration stayed in training as four year olds probably helped Zoffany and Canford Cliffs get a better start and probably kept some of the better mares away from FSS as the new sires were not "sexy "enough racehorses.
i am conscious that I might mix up FSS with FFS so apologies if I do !

What about Iffraaj Colin? For a proven good sire of juveniles and one who produced Rizzena, Chriselliam and Hot Streak in the same crop, his number so far are worrying. 12 runners, 21 runs, still waiting for his first win , although he sired a nice Aga Khan horse in fr.
He covered 150 mares in 2012, so hopefully winners will come soon for him.

11 2-y-o races today - went through them quickly focusing on the top 3-4 horses in the market and I do think it will be another difficult day for the FSS's - hardly any of them catching the eye with a great chance upfront.

Five races tomorrow and more or less the same applies for the FSS's as today. Two days of racing with 16 2-y-o races and I would guess the number of FSS 2-y-o wins will be close to nothing - may be one, may be two the very very most.
 
Why do they do that? It used to be a rule that every meeting had to have at least one 2yo race but now you have meetings without 2yo races. To have 11 on one day is a nonsense.

Fairyhouse 5.55

Jockeyship made the difference in the winning of this in my opinion. Ronan Whelan (Sevenleft) being outridden by Pat Smullen (Rich Jade) there was only a nose in it at the line.

Bath 6.05

This time the David Evans favourite, Pity Cash, prevailed against his stablemate by just six lengths. 'orrible race!

Kempton 7.15

Another improved performance from a Prescott horse with Dutch Heiress finishing second after being headed a furlong by the quite impressive debutant Hawksmoor.

Quantity = lots, quality + hmmmm.

Lingfield 2.10

Poet's Song is a runner for FSS Poet's Voice who was slowly away on debut and never got into the race. Eltham, making her debut, is a half-sister to Uvinza who was third in the 2009 running of the Group 2 Ribblesdale.

Lingfield 2.40

Freddie Freeloader a Zoffany colt who has shown little in his two runs is dropped into a seller.

Haydock 2.50

Two FSS with runners in this; Frozen Power (Effron - making his debut) and Poet's Voice (Queensbury Odyssey - prominent until weakening two out and eventually only beat one home on his debut at Newmarket.

Haydock 3.20

The first nursery of the season and what an unenviable task it must be to allot marks for these youngsters.

Two FSS represented; Zoffany (Bint Aldar - a convincing winner of an ordinary Hamilton maiden last time) and Dick Turpin (Highway Dream - all three of her runs have been on an artificial surface, on her latest run she raced keenly and failed to last home, finishing second).

Haydock 3.50

A tight little Novices' Stakes, too tight for me I'm afraid and "I'll adopt a watching brief".

Bellewstown 5.05

I can find nothing of interest in this.

Tipperary 5.55

Epsom 6.50

Arctic Flower is a runner for FSS Roderic O'Connor she put up a better performance on her second run, at Salisbury, where she showed speed until weakening two out. Machine Learner has to be considered, fourth after a slow start when making his debut in what I thought was a good race at Sandown but recently let down when the winner of that race Albernathy failed to frank the form when when beaten in a Novices' Stakes at Doncaster. Any further reports on the progress of Machine Learner, Eleonora Duse?

Tipperary 7.00

Dewdrop, by Galileo and a half-sister to Lady's First who ran second in a Royal Ascot Group 2 in 2013, didn't show a lot when last of eight on debut at the Curragh.

Newbury 7.05

Burma Road, a daughter of FSS Poet's Voice is making her debut. La Rioja made a promising debut when second in a moderate Lingfield maiden. Twain, making her debut, is a half-sister to Katls -RPR 106- winner of a Listed race for 2-y-os over six furlongs.

Newbury 7.40

FSS Poet's Voice has a runner here - Whitman who, on debut, was third of four in one of those Brighton lotteries. Dylan showed plenty of promise on debut when an unlucky fourth at Newmarket.
 
the twin sails form gets another test tonight in that 7.40..john splendid confirmed it as a very good race by running so well last time in the best 2yo maiden i've seen this year,,that race was too hot for JS..but tonights contest has all the market leaders having a run.

Peter Park was 5 length behind twin sails and the figure i've got for him is higher than Clever Bob's by a few lbs. Whether the drop back to 6 is best i'm not sure but would expect PP to beat CB..and with CB being fav then PP has to be a win+place bet tonight

in the first nursery i think Pippin Street + High Speed are worth a dutch on what they have shown so far

Another professional performance from a Mark Johnston 2-y-o, Elqueem, making his debut, was always prominent and kept on well for a decisive win.

Haydock 3.20

........and the first nursery of the season goes to Wedge the 3/1 favourite trained by Hannon , ridden by Moore wins by 3.5 lengths.


Haydock 3.50

Galileo Gold the 13/8f. swerved from the stalls and caused interference to almost all his rivals, he raced keenly and was always in contention and ridden out to win readily.

Epsom 6.50

A nice debut win for Tony Curtis, he showed some greenness before and during the race but finished strongly and was going away inside the last 100m.

Tipperary 7.00

Doubts about the strength of the form with three newcomers disputing the lead in the final furlong but the Bolger-trained Glamorous Approach did nothing wrong.

Newbury 7.05

A very convincing win for La Rioja but I feel one has to ask "what did she beat?".

Newbury 7.40

A winner for a first season sire as Whitman (by Poet's Voice) made all and clung on close home to repel the strong-finishing debutant Kitaaby, who will surely win soon.

Sandown 2.50

This looks quite competitive but Soapy Aitken's form looks solid, his only defeat coming in the Windsor Castle at Royal Ascot when a decent fourth to Washington DC.

Sandown 3.20

Cartage's third behind Hornsby at Newmarket on debut was encouraging. Taqwaa should improve for his debut second at Kempton. Recognition, a newcomer, is of some interest, he is by Rip Van Winkle and is a half-brother to Alkimos -RPR 108- second in a Group 3 at Royal Ascot.

Bellewstown 5.10

I can't find anything from a breeding point of view.

Beverley 6.45

Again of little interest from the breeding angle.

Haydock 8.00

Two FSS with runners making their debuts; Roderic O'Connor (Haalick) and Lilbourne Lad (Planetaria). Midhmaar, given an 'educational' on debut at York, is a half-brother to Hawaafez winner of the Group 3 Cumberland Lodge over 12f. at Ascot.

Sandown 2.50

The Mark Johnston production line keeps trundling out winners. Riflescope, racing just behind the leaders, took it up in the final furlong and got this stiff five furlongs really well.

Sandown 3.20

This time the Johnston runner, Miniaturist, got away from the stalls well, made all and the others couldn't get to him.

Bellewstown 5.10

A nice debut by the Lord Shanakill filly, Little Fisc, she finished strongly but just failed to get up by a short-head.

Beverley 6.45

A game performance by Lydia's Place making all and holding off the late challenge of the favourite Excessable.

Haydock 8.00

A good debut by the first season sire, Roderic O'Connor, colt Haalick. 'Excited' beforehand and green when the gates opened he didn't have the clearest of runs but ran on well to get the better of the favourite, Jayjinski, near the finish. On RUK there was talk "Group horse" and "black-type animal", could be but just a bit early to jump to those sort of conclusions.

Three first season sires represented: Poet's Voice (Beautiful Firth - Last of 14 on debut at Doncaster), Canford Cliffs (Poplar Close - stayed on well over this course and distance to take second behind Star Focus, she trades at 11/10) and Frozen Power (No Pleasing You - making her debut).

Beverley 2.25

I can find no inspiration from the breeding here.

Leicester 2.40

Two FSS represented in this seller; Atlantic Sport (That'll Happen - a decent third in a maiden at Beverley last time, I notice he's wearing a hood for the first time today and he is trading at 4/6) and Dick Turpin (Fable Of Arachne - no show in a Windsor maiden last time but as she is trained by Stuart Williams it might be worthwhile watching the betting).

Nottingham 6.15

Runners for two FSS here; Poet's Voice (Midnight Malibu - becoming exposed after three runs but she has shown some ability) and Elusive Pimpernel ( Anagallis - making her debut). Jumeirah Star is of some interest being a half-sister to Speed Hawk who ran third to Kingsgate Native and Out Do in a Listed race at Haydock in May of this year.

Carlisle 6.35

FSS Frozen Power has Freeze Style in this, he was a decent third on debut at this course in May but then disappointed when favourite at Nottingham last time. Nothing else takes the eye.

Perhaps we should bacl all Mark Johnston's 2-y-os blindly, this time it was Mistymoistymorning who made all and ran on well.

Beverley 2.25

Probably not the strongest of races, it was won by Compel for Roger Varian who has an excellent record with 2-y-os at this course. Sensational Secret ran an encouraging second on debut and is surely a future winner.

Leicester 2.40

With three non-runners this seller became a bit of a non-event.

Nottingham 6.15

Midnight Malibu got her head in front for first season sire Poet's Voice; the other FSS runner Anagallis (by Elusive Pimpernel) ran a promising second on debut, she was slowly away and made good late headway.

Carlisle 6.35

Mininggold, who appears to have some size, won with something in hand and could well follow up, possibly in a nursery.

The race weakened by three non-runners but a nice debut by Lady Allegra, a daughter of first season sire Canford Cliffs, finishing well to take second behind Fit For Function.

Four runners for FSS; two for Wootton Bassett, Bassett Bleu and Lady Wootton both making their debuts and two for Dream Ahead (Candelisa still green on his second run when finishing second to Bint Aldar at Hamilton. He is a half-brother to Silverheels -RPR 102- third in the 2011 Listed Two-Year Old Trophy at Redcar. Dream Ahead also represented by Donjon Triumphant, a promising second at Redcar on debut and a half-brother to Caledonian Spring -RPR 106- the winner of a Listed race at Haydock as a 2-y-o.

Roscommon 5.45

FSS Pour Moi represented by Quids In who is making his debut. Antelope Canyon has shown little in his two outings but is a half-brother to three useful animals (all by Singspiel) the best of those being Gloomy Sunday winner of the Group 3 Henry II Stakes at Sandown over an extended two miles.

Windsor 6.25

Three FSS runners: Dream Ahead (Edification - second in what looked a smart Newmarket maiden last time), Zoffany (Essenaitch -making his debut) and Frozen Power (Red Hot Chilly - showed some speed when last of nine at Leicester on debut). Imperious One is a full-brother to Royal Confidence, winner of a Listed event at Doncaster. Also of interest is Ornate a half-brother to Saayerr winner of the Group 2 Richmond Stakes at Goodwood.

Ripon 6.35

Little Swift, a Kodiac filly, is trading at 1/2 and will be difficult to beat if she repeats the form of her latest run at Newbury when she was beaten a short-head into second place by Poster Girl. Of some interest is Leedora who is a full-sister to Madrileno, twice placed in Listed races in France.

The first season sire, Dream Ahead, colt just got home in a three way photo.

Roscommon 5.45

The rest of the field's chances were greatly enhanced when the saddle of the favourite harass slipped at halfway. The stoutly bred Antelope Canyon found enough speed to hold off the late challenge of Escondida. Quids In, the Pour Moi colt, did a lot better than his odds of 25/1 suggested he would being there with a chance two out.

Windsor 6.25

I don't know what to make of this result this first three home having the odds of 10/1, 20/1 and 100/1. Ornate, in fourth, did best of the fancied ones always prominent going clear to out but fading in the final 100m.

Ripon 6.35

At odds of 30/100 you would have expected Little Swift to dominate but it never happened. Looking like a pony next to the winner Anushka Noo Noo it was an occasion when size was important.

Pontefract 2.10

A nursery with two FSS having runners; Canford Cliffs (Holy Grail - a staying-on fourth behind Easton Angel in the Hilary Needler at Beverley on her last run) and Lilbourne Lad (City Of Stars - becoming rather exposed having had four runs).

Wolverhampton 4.55

Struggling to find a breeding angle here except to say that Boycie, a half-brother to Charm School - winner of the 2009 running of the 12f. November Handicap, should be suited by the step up to seven furlongs.

Brighton 6.55

Two runners for FSS;Cape Blanco (Indrapura - after swerving at the start was last of 15 in a Newbury maiden on debut) and Frozen Power (Powered, already gelded, making his debut). Probably another winner for Mark Johnston Ltd. here with Street Duel dominating the market at 4/11. He is by Street Cry and is a half-brother to Arctic Cosmos winner of the 2010 St. Leger, there was a lot to like about his debut at Newmarket when a close fourth to Hornsby after having no luck in running.

Another compare between today's FSS stats against the one Colin posted on July 6th last year:

Runners produced by 27 FSS of 2014 did run by July 5th, this year it's 19 FSS with runners by July 6th - roughly 2 thirds from last year.

The 27 FSS's of 2014 had a total of 710 runs with 89 wins (strikerate 12,5 %) by July 5th - this year the 2 thirds of FSS's compared to last year managed roughly less than half of the runs and half the wins of last year (the strikerate is 13.1 %).

What the strikerate shows is that once a 2-y-o is on the track in 2015 the wins are comparable to last year - as ED phrased 'luckily the 2-y-o don't know their by a FSS' :D

The lesser number of FSS's with runs by now (19 instead of 27) seems to indicate either a lower crop of this year's FSS and/or smaller books and/or less early progeny. Smaller books and less early progeny at least by quite a number of the FSS seems to be indicated by less than half the runs and about half the wins compared to 2014.

Boycie just got the better of Buffalo Soldier, the pair finishing well clear.

Brighton 6.55

Indrapura was a winner for first season sire Cape Blanco with Street Battle the 1/4 shot looking unsuited to the course. One has to ask did Johnston think that his charge, taking in his size and stride, was ever likely to show his best on this sort of switchback.........or was he thinking ahead to next year's Derby!?!?:blink:

FSS Lilbourne Lad has Lil's Joy running for him here, she appears to have regressed somewhat, a disappointing 11/10 favourite at Catterick last time.

Wolverhampton 2.20

Lilbourne Lad has one in this as well, Lilvanita who was green and missed the break on debut at Carlisle. Encantar was 50/1 when finishing strongly for second on her latest run at Musselburgh, she is a half-sister to Red Gulch the winner of a Listed race at Longchamp.

Catterick 2.30

Can Star Focus keep the Braveheart wagon rolling? She made all when winning over 7f. at Beverley last time, this Catterick six might be a touch sharp but she is a half-sister to an Italian Group 3 winner over six furlongs.

Lingfield 2.40

Two runners for FSS; Canford Cliffs is represented by Canford Belle who showed little first time up at Windsor, and Roderic O'Connor has Becca Campbell running, she didn't show a lot of promise when a rather distant fourth on her debut here over the minimum trip.

Catterick 3.00

FSS Frozen Power is represented by Freeze A Crowd who has been very greening both his runs, should improve but better watched at the moment. Rio Deva showed some ability when third at Musselburgh last time and she is a half-sister to smart sprint handicapper Kingsgate Choice - RPR 113.

Naas 6.00

Herald The Dawn is the horse of great interest here being a full-brother to Dawn Approach who, if you remember, won the 2,000 Guineas and the St. James's Palace in 2013. The form horse and 4/6 favourite Lieutenant General made a very encouraging debut when second to Sanus Per Aquam at the Curragh, Jim Bolger who trained that winner also has charge of the above-mentioned Herald The Dawn, an interesting race.

Naas 7.00

FSS Zoffany's The Yellow Bus is in this, she was 25/1 when a well-beaten second, to Minding, on her debut at Leopardstown. Twin Falls who showed early speed when seventh of eight on debut at the Curragh is a half-sister to Final Exam the winner of a Group 3 at the Curragh -RPR 113.

Kempton 7.50

Two FSS with runners; Pour Moi (Gaelic Angel making her debut and Poet's Voice (Rose Zafonic, who is also having her first run is a half-sister to Talking Hands, winner of a Listed event at Ascot and fourth in the Group 3 Solario Stakes at Sandown as a 2-y-o). Justice Angel, a promising third last time out over course and distance, is a half-sister to Success Days, who won this years Derrinstown Derby Trial at Leopardstown by 10 lengths but then finished well last in the Derby behind Golden Horn.

Going to be a good race to watch and will be cheering on Herald The Dawn. On the drift and just taken 4\1 with Bet365.

Born a month Later than full Brother Dawn Approach who had already won 4 races by this time in his career including the Coventry Stakes. Ground, course and distance today should suit based on his brothers career. Hopefully he has just as much ability and will need it to win against a strong favourite.

Won by the well-supported Star Jeanie but take a look at the ride Adam Kirby gave Magic Strike inside the final furlong, perhaps the horse developed a problem but Kirby was very gentle with him.

Naas 6.00

Dawn Approach's brother Herald The Dawn ran well enough on debut but Lieutenant General didn't show the expected improvement on his very encouraging Curragh debut. The Kodiac colt, Reckless Endeavour won well on his third appearance.

Naas 7.00

Won well by the Bolger-trained, well-supported, Queen Of Sicily.

First season sires with runners: Lilbourne Lad - Onefourseven making his debut, Dick Turpin - Dressed To Thrill making her debut, Frozen Power has two, Strummer making his debut and Madame Barker last of nine on debut over this course and distance. Seaperle, another making her debut, is a half-sister to a number of decent animals, the best of them Eastern Romance - RPR 107 - winner of a Listed race for 2-y-os at Longchamp.

Newmarket 2.40

This looks open and form will have more of a bearing on the result than breeding.........I theeeenk.

Doncaster 2.50

FSS Dream Ahead represented by the debutant Dream Mover. Rokerby Hall is a half-sister to Royal Rascal winner of a York Listed race.

Newmarket 4.20

Two FSS represented; Dream Ahead (Cosmopolitan Girl who showed little in her Kempton debut) and Lilbourne Lad (Turaathy who is making her debut and is a half-sister to Music Theory -RPR 110- a good handicapper but seems to prefer an artificial surface).

Newmarket 4.50

Two FSS represented; Dream Ahead (Madhatten who is making her debut is a half-sister to Roscoff, second in a Listed race at Saint Cloud) and Canford Cliffs (Rio's Cliffs on debut).

Leopardstown 5.50

Looks to be a match between the unbeaten colts, Port Douglas (half-brother to some classy German horses) and Sanus Per Aquam (a full-brother to Morning Mix, second in a Listed race early last month and followed up three weeks later with an easy win at the Curragh). The form of the races they have won is yet to be franked.

Epsom 6.40

Can't find any encouragement from the breeding in this.

Newbury 7.00

FSS Poet's Voice has Patanjali making her debut in this. Two other debutantes who might be worth watching are; Caledonia Duchess a Half-sister to Caledonia Lady the winner of the 2012 running of the Group 3 Coral Charge at Sandown, and Without Doubt who is a half-sister to Moriarty winner of two 2-y-o races in this country before going to be trained in Australia going on to win a Group 1 over nine furlongs.
 
Queen Of Sicily very spooky in parade ring with ear plugs and two handlers but settled down nicely before going to start.
Tall and very angular but did her job well. Eddie Lynam had a nice Starspangledbanner filly that should come on for the run.

this is one hell of a good fto lady...very strong late sectional which gives a marked up speed figure of 105

no fancy entries but you will struggle to see a better FTO performance by a 2yo filly
