The 2015 2-y-o thread.

Yesterday

Newmarket 1.55

Recorder just held off the challenge of Culturati who made a very promising debut.

Ascot 2.05

Besharah seemed comfortable enough with the softer ground and had no great problem holding off the two Hannon runners.

Newcastle 2.10

Oh dear! I thought my fancy, Street Dual, had the race won on about three occasions but he was unable to hold off the late challenge of Good Intent. The winner missed the break, galloped like a cross between a camel and a kangaroo and his rider lost his whip!!.........could be some horse when things go right.

Newmarket 4.15

A winner for first season sire Dream Ahead with Raucous getting up close home.

York 5.10

Bint Aldar was a narrow-margin winner for FSS Zoffany.

Salisbury 6.45

Vibrant Chords, the gelded son of FSS Poet's Voice, almost made a winning debut just losing it on the line to another newcomer Steel Of Madrid.

Today

Uninteresting racing today from my point of view with just the one race worth bothering with.

Carlisle 2.10

Four FSS represented; Dream Ahead (Donjuan Triumphant - Has shown plenty of ability in two narrow defeats), Zoffany (Color Model - showed some ability in two races in Ireland when trained by J.P.Murtagh), Lilbourne Lad (Nouvelli Dancer - never showed when 9th. of 12 on debut at Beverley) and Canford Cliffs (Silhuette - making her debut).

Top of the first season sires table by wins, this morning:

ZOFFANY 14 FROM 74

CANFORD CLIFFS 14 - 76

DREAM AHEAD 8 - 36

POET'S VOICE 7 - 52

LILBOURNE LAD 7- 82

Interesting you say that EC1 as the comments on Husbandry elsewhere have been very guarded. One commentator didn't like his action. He's a Paco Boy so may improve with racing. He's also a first foal of a useful mare who won a few times and is out of a Lupe Stakes 2nd. The mare, Humdrum, has a yearling colt by Exceed and Excel called Elementary, she is by the way half-sister to Ring of Truth.

In his stable tour Balding said he was a likeable type and likely to be early. He now says he'll look for a race at Goodwood for him.

The victory of Guitafan highlights the form of this race and Husbandry. I notice Balding has him entered in the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster and the Middle Park: a bit far-fetched?

Sounds as if Bell was highly disappointed by the run of Academy House on Saturday (last to Raucous). I have said I have him top of the list of the so-far-seen 2yos from Bell, so I can imagine his disappointment. Having said that the season is just past half-way so a lot can happen and there are more 2yos to see. Two who have caught the eye recently have been a Duke of Marmalade colt called Duck a L'Orange and a horse of unidentified breeding called Taurean Star.

There are 4 Royal 2yos (all fillies) at Bell's and only one had been seen up until this week, that being Forecaster (by Fastnet Rock), who looks as if she needs to learn a bit more. This weekend 2 galloped together and they went about their work quite nicely: Loud Applause (a Royal Applause sister to Pack Together) and Bonhomie (a Sharmadal out of an undistinguished mare). I'd like to see the 4th as that's a Makfi sister to the reasonable Touchline.

Latest RaceBets odds for champion FSS 2015 (compared with previous overview last week):

Canford Cliffs 4/7 (from 5/4) - 15 wins from 77 runs, strikerate 19.48 %
Zoffany 13/8 (from evs) - 14 wins from 75 runs, strikerate 18.67 %
Dream Ahead 6/1 (unchanged) - 8 wins from 37 runs, strikerate 21.62 %
Lilbourne Lad 6/1 (from 5/1) - 7 wins from 83 runs, strikerate 8.43 %
Poet's Voice 16/1 (unchanged) - 7 wins from 52 runs, strikerate 13.46 %
Roderic O'Connor 33/1 (unchanged) - 4 wins from 33 runs, strikerate 12.12 %
Frozen Power 33/1 (unchanged) - 4 wins from 53 runs, strikerate 7.55 %
Pour moi 66/1 (unchanged) - no win from 9 runs, strikerate 0.00 %
Dick Turpin 100/1 (unchanged) - 3 wins from 29 runs, strikerate 10.34 %

Nice battle going on right now. And in fairness Dream Ahead is holding well too with his much fewer runners. He's got the best strikerate of the lot and with a hot pot running today (Nisser, Windsor 5.55) he looks to be on 9 wins tomorrow. Lilbourne Lad is running out of gas at the moment, Poet's Voice holds on ok and the remainder can be ignored.

Yesterday

Carlisle 2.10

Another winner for first season sire Canford Cliffs with Silhuette just fighting off the favourite close home.

Today

Ayr 2.00

FSS Frozen Power represented by Strummer who showed a little promise when slowly away and finishing sixth on his debut at Carlisle.

Galway 6.15

Two newcomers of some interest; the Galileo colt Unicorn is a full-brother to Bondi Beach winner of a 14f. Group 3 at the Curragh in June, and Candelaria - a full-brother to Arabian Gleam the winner of two Group 2s over seven furlongs. True Solitaire, second in a Gowran maiden on debut, is a half-brother to the Group 3 winner Carla Bianca.

Windsor 5.55

FSS Dream Ahead represented by Nisser fourth to Madrinho in an Ascot maiden last time.

Windsor 6.30

Three FSS with runners; Zoffany ( Any Guest, who didn't have the clearest of runs at Ascot on debut, is half-brother to Imperial Guest -RPR 109- fourth in an Ascot Group 1 over six), Poet's Voice (Arab Poet - making his debut) and Frozen Power (Kristoff - showed very little on debut at Windsor but is a half-brother to the useful sprint handicapper Mac's Power).

Yesterday

Ayr 2.00

Very professional and impressive performance, on his second outing, by the favourite Farkle Minkus.

Southwell 5.35

Tiggy Wiggy's half-brother Cool Silk Boy shows some ability to take this nicely.

Windsor 5.55

A short-priced winner for first season sire Dream Ahead with Nisser winning in good style.

Southwell 6.05

Nice winning debut by Rocking Rudolph.

Galway 6.15

True Solitaire easily justified favouritism.

Windsor 6.30

A couple of pleasing debuts; Mamillius could well have won the race with a clear run but had to settle for second, and Arab Poet made progress from half-way without having maximum encouragement.

Today

Wolverhampton 1.50

FSS Frozen Power represented by Silhouette who showed nothing when last of 8 on his Chelmsford debut.

Goodwood 2.35

An open-looking Group 2

Beverley 2.45

The debutant Dubai colt Jordan Sport is a full-brother to Akeed Mofeed -RPR 120- winner of the 2013 Group 1 Hong Kong Cup.

Beverley 3.20

FSS Canford Cliffs has Garden World runnin , she showed ability on debut, recovering from being hampered at the start and running on for sixth.

Goodwood 4.55

Three FSS with runners; Zoffany (Papa Luigi - third in a decent York maiden on his last appearance), Poet's Voice (Poet's Song - hasn't shown a lot being slowly away in both starts) and Canford Cliffs (Whitecliff Park - showed some speed before weakening two out at Sandown last time). I have to give a mention to Inland Sea, who didn't have the clearest of runs when fourth in an ordinary Windsor maiden on debut, he is a full-brother to No Nay Never the American-trained winner of the 2013 running of the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes at Ascot.

Galway 6.15

FSS Canford Cliffs represented by the debutante Masonbrook Lady. Two others of note; Siamsaiocht - ran a very promising debut when second to Alice Springs in a Curragh maiden, she is full-sister to Parish Hall the winner of the Group 1 Dewhurst as a 2-y-o, and Sing For Me, sixth in the same Curragh maiden (having an 'educational'), she is a full-sister to several good performers including Quest For Peace, the winner of the 2011 Group 3 Cumberland Lodge at Ascot.

am a big fan of Birchwood..but last time on decent ground was the time to back him..was beaten on slow ground...and i don't think he represents any value today...Ibn Malik won the best maiden time wise of the season..but this is a tough race..one to watch

Today

Beverley 3.20

FSS Canford Cliffs has Garden World runnin , she showed ability on debut, recovering from being hampered at the start and running on for sixth.

... and truly obliged to give CC a 16-14 lead - first time he's ahead by two.

Thanks, ED.

Yesterday

Goodwood 2.35

Messy affair won by Galileo Gold, the favourite Birchwood was very unlucky in running.

Beverley 2.45

Another messy race with the well-supported (11/8f.) newcomer Jordan Sport probably beaten by greenness.

Beverley 3.20

A winner for first season sire Canford Cliffs with Garden World.

Goodwood 4.55

A pleasing result for 'this thread' as Inland Sea justified late support to get the better of Papa Luigi. A nice debut from Scarlet Dragon just behind in third.

Galway 6.15

Haven't seen this race yet but it reads like an impressive performance by the winner Now Or Never. Siamsaiocht and Sing For Me didn't run up to my expectations.

Today

Redcar 1.50

Two first season sires with runners; Wootton Bassett (Teba Mateba - a promising fourth on debut at Beverley is a half-brother to Greyfriarschorista, a very close second in a listed event at Lingfield and the winner of seven handicaps) and Roderic O'Connor (Cautionary Note - making her debut). It might be worth considering Kingthistle, he was fifth on debut at Beverley and is a gelded half-brother to Alfred Hutchinson, the winner of the Listed Hambleton Handicap at York earlier this year.

Redcar 2.20

Three FSS represented; Zoffany (Dolphin Vista - making his debut), Poet's Voice (Ae Fananah - has showed some speed but also shown greenness in her two runs) and Dream Ahead (Haley Bop - looked out of her depth at Newmarket last time but showed a degree of ability when third in a Haydock maiden on debut).

Goodwood 3.45

A Group 3 and King Of Rooks seeks to redeem his, rather tarnished, reputation after that slug-fest at Ascot last time.

Goodwood 4.20

Two FSS with runners; Lilbourne Lad (Forgotten Wish, making her debut, is a half-sister to Massive - winner of a Listed event over a mile at Sandown) and Dream Ahead ( Silent Dreamer, also making her debut, is a half-sister to Crecy - second in a Group 2 at Saint-Cloud.

Leicester 6.15

Two FSS with runners; Dick Turpin (Thief Of Hearts who was slowly away and carried wide on her first run, at Ffos Las) and Lilbourne Lad (Totzo, who is making her debut).

Sandown 7.00

Two FSS represented; Cape Blanco (Real Dominion - on debut) and Frozen Power (Sky Of Stars - also making his debut). Two others newcomers worthy of mention are: Chief Whip a half-brother to two black-type performers, Chacamaidee and J Wonder; and More To Come a Sea The Stars half-brother to Mukhadaram - the winner of last year's Coral Eclipse.

Yesterday

Redcar 1.50

Comfortable win for Rantan, going clear one out and eased down.

Redcar 2.20

Haley Bop a winner for first season sire Dream Ahead.

Goodwood 3.45

King Of Rooks wasn't helped by his draw and perhaps he could do with a change of rider. Kachy remains unbeaten after two outings and won well here.

Goodwood 4.20

It has to be said I'm afraid, a promising run from Promising Run to finish third to two horses that had had a run.

Leicester 6.15

An emphatic win for the newcomer Continental Lady.

Sandown 7.00

Nice winning debut by Chief Whip, he appeared to show a nice turn of foot to put the race to bed inside the final furlong. In a pretty rough race there were a number of "hard-luck stories" and it would be surprising if the third (Paris Protocol) and fourth (Real Dominion) weren't up to winning a race.

Leicester 7.50

Galesburg confirmed the promise shown on debut after disappointing on his second run.

Today

Nottingham 2.25

First season sire Dream Ahead represented by Madhatten who showed showed speed before weakening and finishing last of seven on debut at Newbury, she is a half-sister to Roscoff, second in a Listed mile event at Saint-Cloud.

Goodwood 2.35

The Group 2 Richmond looks quite competitive but Shalaa looked a bit special when winning the July Stakes last time.

Goodwood 4.20

Five runners for FSS: Lilbourne Lad (Bambino - making her debut), Dick Turpin (Mayfair Magic - showed some ability when 9th. of 13 on debut in an ordinary Newbury maiden), Poet's Voice (Lady Perignon - making her debut), Pour Moi (Pour Pavot - shown very little in two runs) and Lilbourne Lad (Turaathy - showed greenness on debut sixth at Newmarket, is a half-sister to Music Theory - a smart handicapper with a top RPR of 110.).

Goodwood 4.55

A big-field nursery with four FSS represented: Dick Turpin (Lagenda - winner of a decent Wetherby maiden last time), Zoffany (Essenaitch - a close -up last of four in an Ascot Listed race last week), Poet's Voice (Montsarrat - unbeaten in a maiden at Salisbury and a two-runner nursery at Catterick) and Shakespearean (Art Collection - winner of a Brighton maiden before being over-faced in Listed company at Epsom).

Ffos las 6.10

FSS Lilbourne Lad represented by Lilbourne Prince who showed some ability on debut at Newbury last week.

Ffos Las 6.45

FSS Frozen Power has Powerful Dream in this, winner of a Bath nursery last time and has gone up 5lbs. for that effort.

Epsom 7.00

The "second-time-out C.Appleby-trained runners" dribble of winners seems to have totally dried up but nevertheless Rockley assumes that mantle in this, he ran third in a moderate Lingfield maiden on debut. Brave Archibald is a son of Arch and a full-brother to Bauble Queen, the winner of a Grade 2 race at Santa Anita.

Yesterday

Nottingham 2.25

Successful debut by Curtain Call, the fourth home, Thewayitellum, put in an eye-catching performance - making headway two out and finishing strongly.

Goodwood 2.35

Shalaa confirmed the impression that he is a very good colt and there's a good chance he'll get a mile as a 3-y-o.

Goodwood 4.20

Notary justified favouritism but she had to work hard for it with the newcomer Anabel just going down by a short-head.

Ffos Las 6.10

A winner for first season sire Lilbourne Lad with Lilbourne Prince just getting up on the line.

Today

Thirsk 1.50

Planetaria is a runner for FSS Lilbourne Lad.

Thirsk 2.20

Two FSS with runners; Lilbourne Lad (Richter Scale - a well-beaten favourite at Musselburgh last time) and Canford Cliffs (Lady Clair - a comfortable winner on debut in a moderate Cattrick maiden.

Galway 5.45

Two FSS represented; Canford Cliffs (Ocean Tides - making his debut) and Zoffany (Zig Zag - has been a touch disappointing in his two runs).

Musselburgh 6.10

Two FSS with runners; Dick Turpin (Black Hambleton - promising third in a small race at Hamilton on debut) and Poet's Voice (Dreaming Voice - making his debut is a half-brother to Prince Bishop, the winner of the Dubai World Cup earlier this year.

Newmarket 6.25

FSS Canford Cliffs has two in this; Rockley Point - third in an Ascot maiden last time and Wimple Hall - making his debut.

Bath 7.10

Two FSS represented; Frozen Power (Efron - shown little in two runs) and Dick Turpin (Lady Katherine - shown nothing in four runs).

Thirsk 1.50

Planetaria is a runner for FSS Planetaria.

Just a little typo - was surprised by the FSS Planetaria, it's a Lilbourne Lad.

Thx for your efforts though Col! Busy weekend again tomorrow, looking forward to your re- and pre-view!

Today

Thirsk 2.20

Two FSS with runners; Lilbourne Lad (Richter Scale - a well-beaten favourite at Musselburgh last time) and Canford Cliffs (Lady Clair - a comfortable winner on debut in a moderate Cattrick maiden.

Lady Clair made it two wins from as many starts to give CC a 17-14 lead over Zoffany.

Nice to know someone is reading this shite!:D

Yesterday

Thirsk 2.20

Lady Clair a winner for Canford Cliffs.

Galway 5,45

The strongly-supported Palmetto Dunes just lost out in a prolonged duel, finishing second to Whiskey Sour with the rest well beaten.

Musselburgh 6.10

Good debut by Templar finishing a close second to favourite Awohaam.

Newmarket 6.25

The FSS Canford Cliffs debutant Wimple Hall did well, finishing second to another newcomer Dutch Gallery.

Musselburgh 7.55

Zoraida took advantage of her mark of 58 to win comfortably, capable of going in again.

Today

Doncaster 1.45

Two FSS represented; Paddy O'Prada (Walsingham Grange- a decent fourth at Ascot on debut is a half-brother to Malossol- winner of an Italian Group 3) and Canford Cliffs ( Canny Style - third in all her three runs, last time to Bahaarah in a Doncaster maiden fillies race).

Thirsk !.50

Three FSS with runners; Zoffany (Stamp Hill - two runs in Ireland before running 12th. of 27 in the Windsor Castle at Ascot, now moved to Fahey from Murtagh), Frozen Power (Freeze A Crowd - raced too keenly on his last appearance, in a moderate Carlisle maiden) and Wootton Bassett (Lady Wootton - showed some ability when finishing midfield at Ayr on debut).

Newmarket 2.50

A nursery with FSS Canford Cliffs having two runners; Justice Lass who confirmed earlier promise when making all to win at Windsor last time and Holy Grail, second to Show Stealer at Pontefract last time and has the same mark today.

Newmarket 3.25

FSS Zoffany represented by Light Up Our World who was slowly away when second to Marenko at Ascot on debut, the form has yet to be franked. A newcomer worth a mention is Cersei, a half-sister to Balios, the winner of the Group 2 King Edward VII at Ascot in June.

Galway 3.50

FSS Pour Moi represented by Quids In who made an interesting debut when fourth to Antelope Canyon at Roscommon. Aa Bee See, a newcomer, is a gelded half-brother to two black-type performers, Grandeur -RPR 118- second in a Group 2 at York and Magnolia Beach -RPR 106- fourth in a Group 3 at Dundalk.

Goodwood 4.20

Three FSS runners; Lilbourne Lad (Bernie's Boy - beaten a head into second by Ray's The Bar at Ascot on his last run), Dream Ahead (Tigerwolf - making his debut) and Wootton Bassett (Wootton Vale, also a newcomer, is a half-brother to Wadaat who was beaten a nose in the Italian Oaks of 2009). Two runners who are well related are, Jarir - a half-brother to High Accolade I, winner of the Group 3 Cumberland Lodge Stakes and Hawkerland, a newcomer, who is a Sea The Stars half-brother to All The Good - the winner of the Group 1 Caulfield Cup a rich Australian handicap run over 12f.

Hamilton 5.40

A low-grade nursery with two FSS represented; Lilbourne Lad (Cotton Camera - a fair third to Strands Of Silk over 5f. at Doncaster in May) and Canford Cliffs (Canford Kilbey - has had four unsuccessful runs and will surely do better in nursery company, has been dropped 2lbs. for his last effort when 5th. of 6 at Lingfield).

Lingfield 5.55

Must give a mention to Machine Learner, probably wasn't suited by the undulations and cambers of Epsom when a disappointing favourite last time, he is a half-brother by Sir Percy to three black-type performers.

P.S.

For those still interested in C.Appleby second-time-outers there are two today: Langlauf (Newmarket 3.25) and Folkswood (Goodwood 4.20).

Some CC form - Holy Grail obliging at odds of 16/1 to make it 18-14 for CC over Zoffany

Yesterday

Newmarket 2.50

A winner for first season sire Canford Cliffs with Holy Grail.

Newmarket 3.20

Light Up Our World a winner for FSS Zoffany.

Goodwood 4.20

Folkswood wins on his second run for C.Appleby.

Lingfield 5.55

Machine Learner just managed to live up to expectations, getting home by a short-head. A nice debut by Gracious John in third place, slowly away, not the clearest of runs, finished well.

Today

Chester 2.10

Both Sides, a promising fifth on debut at Sandown faces a very different course today, is a half-brother to Sparkling Beam the winner of a 9f. Group 3 at Chantilly.

Chester 2.40

FSS Frozen Power represented by Madrinho who followed up his surprise Ascot win with a sound effort in a Listed race at Newbury - beaten a neck into second, by Tasleet, in a three-horse photo.

Chester 2.40

King Robert won with a strong finishing run but the race saw the sad demise of Rogue's Gallery who suffered a fatal injury when leading the race.

Today

Nottingham 2.00

Two first season sires represented; Lilbourne Lad (Celestial Lad - didn't have the clearest of runs when 9th. of 10 at Newmarket on debut) and Atlantic Sport (That'll Happen - favourite when third to Lathom at Beverley on his latest run).

Ripon 2.15

Two FSS with runners; Frozen Power (Ice Dream - making debut), and Zoffany (Itsinthestars - decent third in ordinary Beverley maiden on debut). Debutante Soteria is a half-sister to three black-type performers including Gallagher -RPR 115- who ran second to Bushranger in a 2-y-o Group 1 at Deauville.

Nottingham 2.30

Two runners for FSS Poet's Voice; Queensbury Odyssey who has shown some ability in his three runs and Bathos who showed signs of ability on his second of four runs when fourth in an ordinary Beverley maiden.

Naas 3.55

Retinal, a daughter of FSS Pour Moi makes her debut in this. Herald The Dawn, second to Reckless Endeavour on debut at this course, is a full-brother of Dawn Approach winner of the 2013 2,000 Guineas. Moonlight Magic is an interesting newcomer, his half-brother Masterstroke ran third in the 2012 running of the Prix De L'Arc De Triomphe.

Windsor 6.00

Three FSS represented: Poet's Voice (Electra Voice - third at Windsor on her second, and latest, start. Lilbourne Lad (Gabby's Lad - making debut) and Dream Ahead (Golden Stunner - also making her debut). The newcomer Quick March is of interest, all have her siblings have won at at a decent level and the best of them Mince -RPR 116- won the Listed Garrowby Stakes over 6f. at York.

Interesting turn-around to the beginning of this FSS season. Lilbourne Lad started well and faded out of contention. He still gets the odd winner here and there but nowhere near to what his progeny achieved early inn the season. Dream Ahead I find fascinating. His progeny took a bit longer than others to produce a couple of winners whilst now there is hardly a week without another win for Dream Ahead. And all this comes off a far lower number of runs than the big two. I'm sure he won't trouble Canford Cliffs for the lead whilst I would not rule him out to overtake Zoffany or at least come close. Zoffany's progeny had a cracking Royal Ascot, since then though there was not a lot more to come. Canford Cliffs though was also taking some time beginning of the season and has become a regular scorer lately. Last week it was 3 wins for CC, Zoffany managed 1 win. At the moment I would fancy CC to become champion even though the gap of 3 wins is not dramatic. However, at the moment it looks there are more CC runners than Zoffanys so CC has a really good chance to become champion FSS and meanwhile he fully deserves to be 1/2. The odds of the top3 I find pretty much correct and realistic whilst odds of the other don't matter as none of them will catch CC anyway.

One FSS though to look at a bit closer is Dream Ahead. With his much smaller number of runs he is not far behind Zoffany. Eight of his 17 progeny on the track (47 %) have become winners which is the best percentage of the 9 FSS candidates quoted. His strikerate of more than 25 % is also best of these 9 FSS's.

Obviously his smaller number of runners and runs may have helped his statistic a bit as the bigger the numbers get the more difficult it may become to hold on to good percentages with more average or below average horses to be expected whilst smaller samples may have been lucky to get away without too many of these average and below average ones.

In fact I find him so interesting that I would recommend a clear betting strategy to follow up on him just as Colin recommended the C.Appleby's for the second start. Nearly half of the 17 DA progeny became winners at an average of about 2.5 runs per progeny. So I would recommend to put a bet of identical stake on each of his runners during their first 3 starts and only as long as they are maidens (no point in continued bets after 3 races as maiden to elimiate the potential donkeys that will hardly ever win) . Also, stop doing this as soon as they have become winners and stop doing after 6 weeks middle of September. Reason for this would be the potentially more demanding races his successful progeny may encounter once they are winners and also I would not recommend this late in the season as there may be a higher number of debutant horses brought out for one or two starts in their 2-y-o campaign for the benefit of learning.

I have not yet looked up his runners in detail to what my betting strategy would have achieved but will do so later and post it here.

Anyway, I will put a tenner on each of the Dream Aheads in UK and Ireland over the next 6 weeks as long as the above criteria are met - so not on former winners and not after the 3rd start.

Will post a regular update of how theses Dream Aheads have fared in case somebody finds the idea interesting and hops on the train, too.
