The 2015 2-y-o thread.

I'm finding Brighton 2-y-o races very difficult to read, can't pick a winner when they are entering the final furlong!!

Not sure how useful the following figures for first time out wins will be but anyway:

CANFORD CLIFFS 4 WINS FROM 29 RUNS 13.8%

ZOFFANY 3 - 23 13.0%

DREAM AHEAD 1 - 17 5.9%

LILBOURNE LAD 2 - 35 5.7%

POET'S VOICE 2 - 29 6.9%

Given that every horse that runs has to have a first run I'd say that was significant and there's bugger all between the first two but they are way ahead of the rest.

Good point Eleanora.
Overall figures for FTO % success is disappointing to say the least.
Any two year old races confined to progeny of FSS anyone ?
I doubt there is and is a wonder some sales company did not come with the idea of sponsoring a series of such races.

 I was sure you were going to say I was 'stating the bleeding obvious' but in these matters I'm often surprised how often people miss the obvious as I'm sure I do at times.

So thanks for that.

I'm almost certain that there are no races confined to the progeny of FSS, edgt.

How big would the fields be for such races?

Yesterday

Brighton 2.20

Mansfield was a 10/1 winner on his second run for C.Appleby!!

Kempton 7.10

Impressive win by Nemoralia, she showed a nice turn of foot two out and looked a class or two above her opponents.

Today

Wolverhampton 1.30

FSS Canford Cliffs represented by Taroneesh, tailed-off last 10 on debut at Nottingham.

Haydock 2.40

FSS Lilbourne Lad has the newcomer Spike running for him. Debutant Spanish City is a half-brother to Charming Thought the winner of the 2014 Group 1 Middle Park. Yet another newcomer, Evangelical is a half-sister to Penitent, second in a Group 3 at Epsom.

Brighton 2.50

FSS Roderic O'Connor is represented by Originality who is making his debut, he is a half-brother to Aunt Julia who managed to be placed in a Newbury listed event.

Southwell 5.50

Two FSS with runners; Lilbourne Lad (Rainbow Lad - debut) and Frozen Power (Rupert Boy - shown nothing in three runs).

Newcastle 6.00

FSS Dream Ahead has Candelas running, he was a short-head winner of a moderate Ayr maiden last time.

Sandown 6.15

Two FSS represented; Lilbourne Lad (Bourne Symphony - shown little in two runs) and Dream Ahead (Cosmopolitan Girl - second to Salvo in a Newmarket maiden last time).

Southwell 6.25

Two FSS with runners; Dick Turpin (The Knave - too keen when 7th. of 10 on debut at Ayr) and Frozen Power (No Pleasing You - showed nothing when last of 8 at beverley first time up).

Sandown 6.50

Two FSS with runners; Lilbourne Lad (Bag O f Diamonds - debut) and Poet's Voice (Ronnie Baird - some promise shown on debut at Doncaster).Shahbar, who made a nice debut when a staying-on second at Leicester, is a half-brother tho Al Thakhira - winner of the Group 2 Rockfel in 2013. A newcomer of interest is Brorocco, a half-brother to Elm Park - winner of last year's Racing Post Trophy.

Crikey, 14 2-y-o races tomorrow - Col will have loads of fun ...

3 of these 14 races are in Ireland (Tipperary/evening). The UK ones are 1 in Brighton, 2 in Musselburgh, 2 in Lingfield, and 3 each in the Haydock and Newmarket evening cards.

Altogether 93 runners in 14 races assuming there are no non-runners - average of about 6 1/2 runners per race with non-runners to be expected.

The 11 UK races are 2 races with 4 runners, 3 with 5 runners and 1 with 6. Not sure whether a wider spread of these 2-y-o races would have generated more runners. On Tuesday there were 6 UK races, yesterday 7 races and today 9. 9 races with an average of 8 runners would have been 72 runners just as well as the 72 runners in the 11 UK races tomorrow.

Plus it's debatable how meaningful many of the small field results are and whether they do the sport and the betting in these races any good.

Trainers - and breeders - who are cherry-picking to 'make' their 2-y-o at least a once-off winner will be delighted.

And Col may be delighted after I shocked him with 14 races tomorrow.

Haydock 2.40

Not sure how strong this race was but Firedanser, the winner, seemed to show improved form and there were nice debuts by Spanish City (third) and Evangelical (fourth).

Sandown 6.50

The well-related Shahbar justified the support in to 4/7. Elm Park's half-brother, Brorocco, ran a strange race, left behind when the stalls opened he made ground and appeared to be cantering over his opponents as they approached the final furlong but then went out like a light, he was very weak in the market.

Today

Musselburgh 2.00

A nursery with two FSS runners; Canford Cliffs (Poplar Close - a narrow winner of a moderate Wolverhampton maiden last time) and Lilbourne Lad (Cotton Camera - has had five tries and has yet to get her head in front, she's been beaten twice off this mark of 60).

Lingfield 2.10

Four FSS runners in this seller, three of them for Dick Turpin: Highway Dream - finished last in his two runs in nurseries, the last off a mark of 69, Lady Parmenter - last in a claimer on this course last time and Thief Of Hearts - disgraced herself by refusing to race on her last outing, at Leicester. Lilbourne Lad has Window Shopping running and she was last of 9 at Chepstow on debut.

Musselburgh 2.30

FSS Lilbourne Lad represented by Lil's Joy the winner of a nursery off 77 at Lingfield (turf) on her last run.

Lingfield 2.40

FSS Atlantic Support represented by Shine Likeadiamond who showed plenty of speed on debut at Windsor, prominent until weakening a furlong out and finishing midfield.

Tipperary 5.05

FSS Zoffany has Dolce Strega in this, she showed some promise on debut when a staying on third after a sluggish start.

Newmarket 5.45

A nursery with two FSS runners; Poet's Voice (Montserrat - races off 80 the same mark he had when second to Jaadu in a comparatively valuable Goodwood nursery) and Dream Ahead ( Edification - first run in a handicap, has been disappointing in his last two outings after having shown decent form when second to Elronaq in a Newmarket maiden).

Newmarket 6.15

A seller and FSS Dick Turpin is represented by Fable Of Arachne, third of four in a Leicester seller last time.

Haydock 6.25

Four FSS with runners: Lilbourne Lad (Altarsheed - debut), Poet's Voice (Colour Me Happy - debut), Pour Moi ( Et Toi - showed some promise when third at Sandown over 7f.) and Zoffany ( Foundation - debut).

Newmarket 6.45

A race for 2-y-os that haven't run and there are two FSS represented; Cape Blanco (Best Of Oregon) and Canford Cliffs (Tidal Wave). Emotionless is of definite interest being a half-brother to an American Graded winner Etched -RPR 124- and Out Of Bounds, winner of the Park Hill at Doncaster. A couple of others to look out for; Free Passage, a half-brother to Cape Peron -RPR 113- winner of a French Listed race, and Venturous, a half-brother to Parliament Square third in the Group 1 Prix Morny as a 2-y-o.

Haydock 6.55

A nursery with FSS Poet's Voice represented by Midnight Malibu - showed speed in that valuable Newbury 'sales race' before finishing 17th. of 22, before that she won a moderate Nottingham maiden.

Two FSS with runners; Zoffany (Silken Skies - only beat one home on debut at Windsor but is a half-sister to Orpen Grey who chased Arcano home in the 2009 Group @ July Stakes at Newmarket) and Poet's Voice (Pajantali - a promising fourth in an ordinary Newbury maiden on debut). This Is For You hasn't shown a great in two outings, he is a half-brother to smart sprinter Jonny Mudball.

Curragh 2.50

FSS Zoffany represented by Camellia Japonica, she ran second in what might have been an ordinary Curragh maiden on debut. The newcomer How High The Moon is a full-brother to Diamond and rubies who just got the better of Legatissimo in the Group 1 Pretty Polly before disappointing in the Nassau at Goodwood.

Windsor 3.15

FSS Dream Ahead represented by the newcomer King Of Dreams.

Curragh 3.50

The Group 1 Phoenix Stakes and there are three FSS runners; two for Canford Cliffs (Painted Cliffs - bit of a surprise winner of the Group 2 Railway Stakes last time, and Most Beautiful - convincing winner of a Curragh Group 3 on her latest effort) and one for Zoffany (Washington DC - winner of the Listed Windsor Castle at Ascot last time up).

Dick Turpin 100/1 (unchanged) - 3 wins from 39 runs, strikerate 7.69 %

Zoffany closed the gap to 1 win behind CC - still believe CC will make it. Seems RaceBets has the same opinion looking at the odds and the gap of 1 win only.

Yesterday

Curragh 2.50

Quite an impressive debut by How High The Moon, she didn't have the clearest of runs but finished with a rattle and was going away at the line.

Curragh 3.50

A very impressive win by Air Force Blue in what looked a strong race. Looks to have size and scope and surely be one to be considered in whatever he runs in........but does he have the speed for the July Cup???

Today

Wolverhampton 2.15

FSS Frozen Power has the newcomer Hide Your Fires in this. Pouliche, who ran third at this course on her latest outing, is a half-sister to Enforcer -RPR 121- winner of a Group 3 at Newmarket.

Wolverhampton 2.45

A claimer in which FSS Canford Cliffs is represented by Thee And Me, a winner over this course and distance back in April.

Wolverhampton 3.15

Three FSS with runners; Canford Cliffs (Caitie - shown speed in both her races), Lilbourne Lad (Cinders - has shown promise in both her efforts) and Frozen Power (Ice Dream - no show on debut at Ripon). Our Joy, probably over-faced in the Albany at Ascot last time but showed plenty when a short-head runner-up at Sandown on debut, is a half-sister to Xtension -RPR 121- winner of a Group 2 at Goodwood as a 2-y-o before going on to a successful career in Hong Kong.

Thirsk 6.00

FSS Lilbourne Lad represented by Nouvelli Dancer who showed some signs of ability last time at Carlisle.

Windsor 6.20

Three FSS runners; two for Zoffany: Dolphin Vista ( showed promise when fourth on debut at Redcar) and Pinky Promise ( slowly away and never involved on debut at Newbury), Lilbourne Lad has Somers Lad running for him (he was tailed-off last of seven on his first try at Ascot). Newcomer Ancient Trade is half-brother to Snaafy, the winner of a 3-y-o maiden at Newmarket before going to be trained in the desert and winning at Group 3 and Listed level there.

Yesterday

Couldn't spot anything of interest.

Today

Carlisle 2.15

Lingfield 2.30

Becca Campbell is a runner for FSS Roderic O'Connor in this nursery. She finished well to take third on her latest outing, at Chepstow. The winner of that race, Dubai's Secret, franked the form when winning a nursery at Windsor last night off a mark of 76.

Lingfield 3.05

Newcomer Wapping is of interest, he is a half-brother to two smart American Graded Race winners.

Ffos Las 5.30

FSS Lilbourne Lad has the newcomer Southdown Lad in this.

Nottingham 5.45

A nursery with two FSS represented; Lilbourne Lad (Mecca's Missus - disappointed last time when tailed-off in a nursery at Doncaster, had shown decent form in three runs before that) and Zoffany (Cara's Muse - raced too keenly when finishing second at Lingfield on her last run).

Porter Rosa is having her second run for C.Appleby.

Kempton 7.40

FSS Canford Cliffs has Rockley Point in this nursery, has shown ability in all three runs, the best effort a third when favourite for an Ascot 7f. maiden.

Yesterday

Salisbury 2.20

A very professional performance by Vibrant Chords to take this, he is a gelded son of FSS Poet's Voice.

Kempton 7.10

The well-supported Winter Rose took this quite comfortably.

Kempton 7.40

Roaring Forties was impressive in winning this and the handicapper will be lumping it on for future races.

Today

Salisbury 2.25

FSS Lilbourne Lad has a runner - Bag Of Diamonds who made a promising debut when making late headway to take fourth at Sandown behind Shahbar. Sterling Lines, last of 14 on debut at Goodwood, is a half-brother to the smart Ratio, a winning Group 3 sprinter.

Beverley 2.35

Two FSS runners in this nursery; Dream Ahead (Hillside Dream - a close second off a mark of 70 at Leicester is dropped a pound for today's race) and Poet's Voice (Bathos - a well-beaten (5 lengths) second to Harlequin Rock in a Nottingham nursery last time is off that same market 62 today).

Beverley 3.05

Three FSS runners; two for Zoffany: Color Model who disappointed on her first race in England when a distant fifth at Carlisle, was previously trained in Ireland by JP Murtagh, and, Itsinthestars who disappointed, a touch unlucky it has to be said, last time at Ripon after a promising third on debut at Beverley. Wootton Bassett is represented by Lady Wootton who ran a good third to Crombay at Thirsk last time up.

Ffos Las 5.00

Two FSS runners; Poet's Voice (Poet's Beauty - a close-up third on debut at Salisbury, the second in that race, Vibrant Chords, won well at Salisbury yesterday) and Zoffany (Sark - making his debut). Matidia, who showed some speed on debut at Newmarket, is a half-sister to Corriolanus -RPR 114- a smart handicapper.

Leopardstown 5.20

FSS Zoffany is represented by Gilded Reflection, a very promising fifth on debut in a curragh maiden, who is a half-sister to Lesson In Humility, second in a Group 3 Fillies and Mares race at York. In a deck chair at the moment so missed Big Sky who I had as number 3 in the Bell list but who had not been delivering on the racecourse.

Tomorrow sees two juveniles from Bell in the evening. I'd say Taurean Star and Duck a l'Orange are pretty useful and have been tried on the gallops sufficiently for me to think the former will go close. I have Duck a l'Orange as better than Taurean Star, but in a recent gallop TS slightly had the better of it, both of them coming clear of Show Legend who is a reasonable yardstick. I think Duck a l'Orange will run a big race despite being up against Culturati in what looks a good 8f maiden.

Yesterday

Salisbury 2.25

Bobby Wheeler ver impressive in this, obviously well thought of but had disappointed on debut at Goodwood in May, he was very keen throughout the preliminaries but showed that the confidence in his ability wasn't misplaced by breaking quickly from his wide draw, just about making all and was never challenged.

Beverley 2.35

Bathos was persuaded to put his head in front where it mattered and provided a winner for FSS Poet's Voice.

Beverley 3.05

A nice debut by the Kyllachy filly, Giddy.

Leopardstown 5.20

Juliette Fair had made her debut in a strong-looking maiden at the Curragh, where she finished second, splitting Rockaway Valley and Air Vice Marshall. That form proved good enough here and she paid a fine compliment to the winner of that race, she was always prominent here and went clear a furlong out to win easily.

Today

(Who the fcuk thought up evening racing?!?!)

Newbury 1.45

Three FSS runners. Two for Canford Cliffs; Dream Of Summer - slowly away and not the clearest of runs but last of 10 at Salisbury on debut, and, Storm Rising who is making his debut. Elusive Pimpernel is represented by In The Red, he showed a degree of ability when finishing 8th. of 12 on debut in a Newbury maiden. Manson, a running-on second on his debut at Newbury, is a half-brother to this year's Derby second Jack Hobbs.

Newcastle 2.00

A nursery with four FSS runners. Two for Frozen Power (Emerald Asset and Madame Barker) and two for Poet's Voice (Ae Fananah and Divasesque).

Nottingham 2.10

FSS Dream Ahead is represented by Blackout who showed little when dead-heating for last place on debut at Sandown.

Newbury 2.20

Two FSS represented; Lilbourne Lad (Grapevine) and Atlantic Sport (The Greedy Boy) both making their debuts. Fast And Hot was a promising third on debut at Windsor and is a half-brother to Simply Perfect - the winner of the 2007 Falmouth at Newmarket. The newcomer Nice Future is a half-brother to Viva Pataca -RPR 126- the winner of the 2008 Group 3 Sha Tin Trophy in Hong Kong, would you believe!

Newcastle 2.30

FSS Wootton Bassett has Teba Mateba in this, he made a promising debut at Wetherby but failed to go on from that on his second run, at Redcar.

Newmarket 5.30

Three FSS runners. Lilbourne Lad has two; Bernie's Boy has had three runs but has yet to get his head in front, he has come close on all three attempts (a third and two seconds) and, Cadland Lad, already gelded, is making his debut. Canford Cliffs is represented by Tidal Wave, he ran third to Emotionless in a newcomer's race at Newmarket last week, there is no way of knowing the strength of that form. Tureen Star's chances have been referred to by Eleanora Duse in the previous post.

Newmarket 6.30

Two FSS with runners; Frozen Power (Sky Of Stars - no-show on debut at Sandown last month) and Zoffany (Ventura Storm - every chance and running on when switched to finish third to Recorder on debut at Newmarket). More To Come, by Sea The Stars and a half-brother to Mukhadram the winner of the 2014 Eclipse, was slowly away and hampered inside the final furlong on debut in a decent Sandown maiden. Culturati is having his second run for C.Appleby, he was second to Recorder in the race mentioned above on his first run. Eleonora Duse also passed his opinion on Duck A L'Orange's chance in the earlier post.

Just noticed that I have missed one.....tut-tut.

Catterick 6.40

FSS Canford Cliffs has Cuppatee in this, has had plenty of runs and managed to win on her last run.

A good day for the first season sires yesterday.

Newbury 1.45 - Storm Rising for Canford Cliffs

Nottingham 2.10 - Blackout a, short-head 14/1, winner for Dream Ahead

Newmarket 5.30 - Tidal Wave just got up on the line to win, by a short-head, for Canford Cliffs

Newmarket 6.30 - Ventura Storm a winner for Zoffany

Today

Newbury 1.25

Bay Of St Malo is a newcomer for Canford Cliffs.

Newmarket 1.40

A Class 2 nursery and there are three FSS represented; Canford Cliffs (Holy Grail - has gone up 8lbs. for winning a 6f. Class 2 nursery on this course last time, the extra furlong shouldn't be a problem), Roderic O'Connor (Sharaakah - a comfortable winner of a fillies maiden on this course last time) and Poet's Voice (Electra Voice - probably would have won last time at Windsor 6f. but for wanting to hang left throughout, easier ground may help).

Ripon 1.50

FSS Zoffany has the newcomer Lady Nahema in this.

Newbury 2.00

A Listed event where there have already been three withdrawals (going?) leaving only four runners, still looks difficult to find the winner.

Doncaster 3.15

Two FSS with runners; Pour Moi (Engage, who is making her debut, is a half-sister to Stormina - third in a Chantilly Group 2 as a 3-y-o) and Poet's Voice (Luso Gold - another newcomer, she is a half-sister to Deposer - second in the Jersey Stakes at Ascot in 2009).

Newmarket 3.25

The Gosden-trained newcomer Nomadic is a half-brother to Prolific Champion -RPR 113- winner of the Group 2 Robert Papin in 2010.

Ripon 4.05

FSS Canford Cliffs represented by Silhuette, the winner of her only start, a 6f. maiden at Carlisle, the going is a bit of an unknown.

Lingfield 6.00

Two FSS runners; Shakespearean (Art Collection - winner of a Brighton maiden in May, he's been outclassed on his two runs since, a Listed event at at Epsom and a very competitive Class 2 nursery at Goodwood, he'll be more comfortable in today's company) and Zoffany (Essenaitch - winner of a decent Windsor maiden before finishing a close-up 4th.of 4 in an Ascot listed race on soft ground).

Another reasonable day for the first season sires.

Doncaster 3.15 - a winning debut for Engage, a daughter of Pour Moi.

Ripon 4.05 - Silhuette, a daughter of Canford Cliffs, comfortably retained her unbeaten record.

Lingfield 6.00 - Although appearing to finish in slow motion (ground?), Essenaitch, a son of Zoffany, went clear inside the final furlong.

Today

Dundalk 2.10

FSS Zoffany has the newcomer Well Caught in this, But according to Slim Chance she has no chance!:)

Dundalk 2.40

Another Zoffany newcomer here - Bulgadin Lady. There are some interesting fillies having their second run: Way To My Heart - 20/1 and never put into the race on her first run, at Leopardstown, is a full-sister to Kingfisher who was the runner-up in the Gold Cup at Ascot in June, Ms Brinkleys is a half-sister to, Graphic, the winner of a Class 2 race at Wolverhampton in February - she was a rather distant fourth, after racing prominently, on debut at Down Royal, and finally, Purple Velvet a half-sister to Mutual Regard - the winner of last year's Ebor, she made no show on debut when 11th. of 12 at the Curragh.
