The Derby

The horse just cruised there from well off the pace . Teofilo would have to be some animal to have matched him today .

Raincoat doesn't look so bad for the PDJC now !

Easily the best horse in the race but he gave him an excellent ride.
I'm a poor judge at these things Colin, as I've readily acknowledged before having never ridden (nor had the slightest inclination to ride, a bloody horse) but my immediate impression was that Dettori hadn't given it that good a ride, being slowly away, sitting further off the pace than might be ideal, shuffled back, didn't think he was in the first 6 round Tattenham which I always thought was a rule of thumb etc and he had to go wide there I think (I haven't seen re-run, so could be well off the mark). My impression was that the horse got him out of trouble?

I think he got the horse settled when he looked to be pulling quite hard early on and then creeped into the race without wasting too much energy with sudden moves before letting him loose. I thought it was a well-judged ride.

Warbs, I didn't see the horse being shuffled back, that doesn't mean it didn't happen, but he had the perfect run down the hill and perfectly balanced when making his run.

Nothing wrong with the ride, thought he was perfectly cool on him, knew he was the best in the race, and took no risks. Had a good slot all to himself on the turn and then pulled him out nice and early to prevent any trouble in running. Horse did the rest.

I want an apology from Carson for his constant insinuations that the Ballydoyle jockeys would stop him.

Did you happen to hear Willoughby on RUK today? Slightly more than insinuating.

It would have taken about 80 horses to have stopped Authorised today. I thought Frankie gave him as close to a perfect ride as I've seen for a fast paced Derby - you could see him look round on the turn for dangers fully 4f out because he knew the ones in front had been going too fast.

I'd think Aqualeem could turn out to be pretty good, he raced too close to the pace but fared best of those.

So, Archipenko. Didn't handle the course, or just eased down when it was obvious he couldn't get competitive?

Just so long as he goes no where near Longchamp in October, and the Eagle goes there as Aiden's first string :D Alright straws clutching at etc

Absolutely brilliant ride, as the head-on showed. Frankie didn't panic when he got out of the stalls last, made sure he had plenty of room at the danger points esp Tattenham Corner, tucked him in near the other runners when he might have gone wide to ensure the horse knew he was in a race, never was far off the rails and brought him out to see daylight at the right moment, and the rest is history.

My only criticism is that he won by too far - hope he didn't bottom the horse
Joke - I think he had loads in the tank

Looked pretty impressive - fingers crossed he stays well and we see a lot of him over the summer. Anyone know where he might head next? How did the time compare with yesterday's Oaks/Coronation?

Bring on the older horses in the King George!

Around 6 seconds faster than the Oaks, but it's meaningless given the ground was that bit faster.

Itching to get the full set of times in as I think it might just have been something special on the clock too.

They said 1.23 seconds faster than standard Gareth .

Sorry Warbs can't agree - it was a textbook ride , especially off a very fast pace .

Hyperbole can get us all but that was surely the most impressive win since Generous

Very efficient betting today I went in again on Authorized at 11/10 and 5/4 and backed Eagle Mountain (at 14s and 10s) and Aqaleem (at 9s and 10s) each-way… I haven’t counted it all yet.

For all of those who think that reference to a stamina index (i.e. balance of speed vs. stamina) is irrelevant look at the placing in the tables (ranked in order of Dosage index) of the first two colts’ classics. Dosage may not give you the whole picture, but see how it helps you look past ‘received wisdom’ by defining a narrow band from which to draw winners.

Coolmore couldn't lose either way - being by MONTJEU, AUTHORIZED's win is money in the bank for them...

As I said I'm no judge of these things and it's one of the last areas I try and comment on .

You might be interested in another approach Gareth regarding the trials which I think could well gain currency after this year given that both classic winners were top-rated. Think sections :brows: If I get round to it I'll try dig the article out, but the hypothesis runs along the lines that trials are increasingly run at a false pace and we learn little from them etc, however we can make relative assessments regarding a horses ability as regards acceleration, which combined with breeding offers a clue etc

Not sure if it's a work-in-progress but the RP's Derby result sheet has a Topspeed rating of 128.

And with all the times in, I've got the winner on 102.89 (on a scale where 100 equals a Group 1 winner, and each point equals 1 length over a mile).

There's still some question marks over how he'll handle faster ground, but surely, finally, he can do what no Derby winner since High Chaparral has managed: win again!

Absolutely brilliant ride, as the head-on showed.
Sorry, meant overhead, of course! And I'm sober, too [might rectify that shortly]
