The Road to the 2012 2000 Guineas

another point to note is the ride of Joseph Obrien
taking the gap and changing the whip 4 times in the last 300yds , he rode a very good race.

And how many other jockeys in the race couldn't have done the same?
Nothing against him personally but, not for the first time, today he showed a poor judgement of pace, and it's okay lionising him for winning on much the best horse, but a more experienced jockey would probably have achieved the same result with much less fuss.

When I get round to rating the form, I'll be treating it as three separate races.

I think Hughes went too fast on Trumpet Major in the belief he could set a pace that would offset the stalls disadvantage of the near side. The first two came from pretty much the last three places on that side at halfway. That doesn't happen off a moderate pace.

You should have done alright today in the market w/o Camelot!

if anyone misjudged the pace it was super-soumi. O'Brien can't be faulted.

Obrien rode very well
the place to be was were he was and was brave for the gap taking the right decisions, he is young and ask Spencer about the preassure of the job.

He is not Ryan Moore or Buick but at this moment he is not a negative for me when he is on a horse I fancy.

Great day of racing. I backed Camelot long time ago at 6.35 average and it's been a long couple of weeks. It would be nice to think he can move on and win the Derby and perhaps take his chances in the st leger.

Good to see good horses like Frankel, Carlton House, Sea Moon and Dancing rain in the pre-parade today.

Power was coughing very badly after the race.

Born To Sea disappointing but you'd like to think he still has a chance. Awful runs from Top Offer and Power, though, and why was Talwar supplemented?

Indeed, Murtagh felt Born To Sea "ran too keen" and Dettori said of Talwar: "I made the running but he was just a bit too free."

Top Offer wouldn’t have enjoyed that going (I’m actually surprised he took part) and joking aside, despite not being Nap material, Power has to be better than that.

He'll go for the Irish Guineas and I'll be taking him on again.

You would have to hope he is better than that. Born to Sea beaten a long way out... Top Offer never competitive... Abtaal well beaten... Fencing one paced. The first two were a class apart. Winner could be very very good... serious welly.

Great average price on Camelot. Did you back him before the Racing Post Trophy? If so well done. He should be fine for the trip in the Derby, but there are Montjeu's with greater potential stamina than this one. Nevertheless, it would be great to see him go for the Triple Crown (although he's not the 3/1 chance they're quoting). We were denied the chance to see another Nijinsky with Nashwan and Sea The Stars of course.

Joseph O'Brien was absolutely perfect on Camelot. He won the race without bottoming the horse doing so.

I backed him in March. Back then, he was a general 4/1 chance, with Ladbrokes being top prize at 5/1.

I might be nuts, but I am a little disappointed with him today.
I look forward to the Derby preps and hopefully find something to opose him for Epsom.

I was a little disappointed at the time but I have watched the replay and have completely changed my view. I was really impressed. The fact that he won when he looks sure to be suited by further was good but the way that he did it was exceptional. He was ridden like a very good horse being dropped out and that showed they had a lot of confidence in the horse's ability. He didn't ride him like a stayer and didn't need to.

Exactly so. His damsire is the outstanding miler Kingmambo and his dam Tarfah (who also won at a mile) is out of a mare by Danehill. So he has sharper damside influences, which served him well here. He ran the fastest second, third and final quarters of any in the field today. In short he was the right kind of Montjeu for today's race.

Where does this leave Ernest hemmingway? Will he be sacrificed as an Epsom derby winner to facilitate Camelot now??

I'd say OnTheBridle could ride him out of Ballydoyle naked and no one would blink an eye...

I wonder how many they will run at Epson. Galileo was the only runner in 2001 but in recent years they have used a scattergun approach. I have a feeling they won't want to over complicate things this year and might run two at most.
