The Road to the 2019 Champion Hurdle

I can't see any way they'd run the two of them together Simmo. They think far too highly of both I reckon.

if they run Samcro in the stayers you can bet he is not 100% or he would also go CH IMO

Apple's Jade has a massive chance and the mares is only worth 67k while finishing 2nd in the Champion Hurdle is worth 100 k and 3rd 50k It's a no brainer where she goes.

Olly Murphy said all horses vaccinated once a year when with Elliott were usually around July. Given the new IHRB (8 weeks) and BHA (6 months) ruling on recent vaccinations mean horses will have to have another injection followed by seven days or so off, surely it's likely to affect Elliott's preparations for the Festival.

It’s going to impact on every trainers prep. The above is/was standard.

I wasn't overly impressed with Laurina there and she'll need to brush up her jumping at breakneck champion hurdle pace

She jumped way too big to be a Champion Hurdler. Buv will take a few lengths at every hurdle.

It's some step to the unknown.

Jared Sullivan looks to be an owner of Willie's who doesn't just follow what he is told

I do look forward to seeing her jump a fence

She’d be some spectacle over a fence now. I notice today at his media briefing Mullins said this;

"Hopefully she'll get a clear run from now until Cheltenham. The owner's plan is to run her in the Champion Hurdle and that's what we're aiming for."

In other words if he had his way she’d be in the mares every other day. Jumps too big & personally don’t think she has the speed for 2m.

Honestly think she’ll go mares. He said this after too;

“The champion is where we're aiming for, that's the owners plan, that's our plan, but things can change. Last week she got her flu jab and she missed a week's training. It wasn't ideal, I wanted last week to sharpen her up so she'd be ready for today.”

Charlie Parcs will be the one with the skates on i guess
early on yes but by the time they start rolling down the hill AJ will have taken it up and be kicking onward, laurina on her tail and boov on hers, would be my guess

it may not end up a classic champion hurdle but definitely an exciting one should all 3 turn up

What by your reckoning would constitute a Classic Champion Hurdle ?

I think Apples Jade against Boover providing she puts her best foot forward is one of the best clashes I've seen in any Champion hurdle I can remember. I'm not really sure what to make of Laurina but until we see her beaten we won't quite know how much is there.I think just those 3 being involved makes it one of the best Champion hurdles I can remember in recent years if the ground is decent Verdana Blue and Sharjah could also throw down some sort of challenge to them. Just hoping they all get there in one piece.

Super analysis from a friend of mine who specialises in studying horse stride patterns & gait but uses his 30 year experience to analyse bigger graded races.

“At the Dublin Racing Festival Apples Jade sustained her stride within 5% of Peak for 26.72s to Line over a 60 stride count. Her peak stride was the same as Xmas Hurdle at 4.36s/10strides.

In comparison to BVD (4.48s 4.08s 4.60s) Apples Jade is (4.70s 4.36s 4.59s) This suggests Buveur D’Air can operate at a higher cruising speed before engaging peak and sustain the equal 10 stride time of Apples Jade.

The difference is stride length and Apples Jade’s longer time sustain value. BVD has an 8sec Peak. A big note on Apples Jade from yesterday is she changed leads 10+ times, sometimes unnecessarily. This may not suit Cheltenham over 2m at full pelt. She also flashed her tail, no one saw that after Last jump..the question for her is if they go faster in the champion, which I suspect they will, will that huge sustain time be dented..hard to call it but more than likely it will.

From a physical output sense Buveur D’Air is up there with the best i've seen..because of the way horses are assessed and rated here now with collateral form he'll never get the credit he deserves. I’d love to see BVD in a Group flat race from 12f+..i have suggested he'd be a ideal Melbourne Cup horse”.

If you were listening to Mullins today he suspects he now needs 3m.

"I’m very happy with him at the minute. We have our own reasons why we think he disappointed in the Irish Champion Hurdle and we are going to change a few things for Cheltenham that will hopefully help him. I don’t want to go into what those things are just yet, but we have a few ideas. I know Buveur D’Air’s connections think that he is better than he was on Champion Hurdle day last season, but I’d be hopeful Melon can be better than he was that day too."

That's all I'm going on....if you know anything different would be happy to hear...

If you go to the Sporting Life Twitter page, @sportinglife there’s an interview there from his media day today. Go to about 4m in.
