For some reason I always thought Sharjah was a mare  Can't get everything right  I wish

Anyway HE must have a fair chance today. Despite getting a bit unbalanced at a couple of fences he was very fast getting from A to B.

Sharjah is 3rd fav with William Hill @ 3/1 has to be worth a few shillings

I am thinking Illusionist might be a good bet in the 7.15 at Newcastle tomorrow night. This horse was fifth in a Windsor Castle once upon a time, then won several decent handicaps on turf, before having some time off the track, and so far, not really recovering his best form. That said, his fourth place at Newcastle, behind City Walk, Dakota Gold and Makanah must be good form, in the context of this race. He has only actually ran on the all weather four times, showing a liking for Gosforth Park when finishing fourth twice over. This includes his last run, when he was running on well. I cannot have it that this horse is nearly worthy of being on the longshot thread tomorrow, and he seems good value at 16/1.

I'm finding it hard to muster up enthusiasm for today (again) mainly due to the weather.

The closer at Sandown has been good to me down the years but my two strongest fancies against the field are 5/2 jt favs, which is no use to anyone.

At Aintree I've backed Richmond Lake and Coko Beach in singles and a double.

Not at all happy at the ride CB got. Looked all the way round as though he was there to weigh up the opposition, maybe anticipating the leaders all stopping but one didn't.

Still, the win and the place double keep me nicely in front on the day.

Think the weight in that ground made it tough for CB, DO. I (aftertiming as usual ) did the winner...Venetia, heavy ground, former Festival winner, low weight, decent rider....what’s not to like?

Agree I thought there was nothing wrong with the ride on Coko Beach and actually that it was a very good ride to get as close as he did

I had the winner top rated on his old festival win so not at all surprised.

It did occur to me that maybe the jockey was conscious of the weight being carried and the ground and he got a not dissimilar ride in the Troytown but that was deeper race. When the ground is heavy I like to see mine being ridden close to the pace because it's that much harder to make up ground on something already in a rhythm. CB jumped off prominently but was then allowed to drift back when there was no obvious increase in the pace. All the jockey had to do was hold his position on the heels of the leaders. Very possibly my pocket talking and maybe the jockey got it as close as humanly possible but I can't help thinking a closer ride would have won it for him.

Still, the winner was very well handicapped on that older form and CB has still run well.
