What are you backing Today?

My tracker horse Luccombe Down out at Taunton tomorrow over fences in 1:45. Priced at 6/1 early doors.

Cheers bud, couldn't believe it when that one just went nuts, I felt for the punters, is the jockey OK?!?!?

Think Ian Popham's OK, haven't heard otherwise. Think horse felt he was too close to the wings approaching the hurdle and decided to bail out? Could have been very nasty, so glad horse and rider are OK. Winged Express would not have got near your winner anyway IMHO, as it absolutely sluiced home.

Starlit Cantanta finished third at Wolverhampton and Raise A Spark second at Hereford; both returning place money.

Today's Selections:

1.05 - Towcester - Only Gorgeous. 1 pt e/w. Available at 16/1.
Some of these are likely to prove better over fences than they were over hurdles in time. Adarenna, Cor Wot An Apple, Dontmindboys, Brise Couer and Brown Bear all fall into that category. So does Only Gorgeous who, despite being weak in the early markets and disappointing on his only previous start over fences, may be worth risking. He was an inconsistent hurdler but he had pieces if form which would make him well weighted for this Chase debut and he has gone well fresh in the past. He is versatile regarding ground conditions and the drop to a stiff two miles could suit. Only Gorgeous is a former Point winner and represents a Trainer who places her horses well over fences. She has a very profitable 20% strike rate with them in handicaps in recent seasons. She sends two horses on a 360 mile round trip to this track this afternoon.

1.35 - Towcester - Doctor Look Here. 0.5 pts e/w. Available at 25/1.
The second of Sue Gardener's horses here this afternoon (stablemate of Only Gorgeous). Verygoodverygood heads the market for this and he is chasing a hat-trick after recording two easy victories recently. He could prove hard to beat but, although it's early days, he has yet to prove his effectiveness on a right-handed track and may be worth opposing. Doctor Look Here was a comfortable winner of a 19 furlong Taunton Handicap last December and he paid the price for that with a 13 pound hike in the weights. His efforts in two races since suggests his new mark was beyond him but, one came over an extended 21 furlongs in heavy ground at Sandown and the other came in a large field in Ireland, so it's not hard to forgive those performances. He is still ten pounds above his winning mark but the return to better ground may suit and he ran well on last season's reappearance. The Taunton form has worked out very well and certainly suggests that his current mark may not be beyond him. At a big price he may outrun his odds and make the frame at least.

1.45 - Taunton - Earthmoves. 2.5 pts win. Available at 4/1.
There are some potentially useful Chasers in this Novice Handicap. Six of the eight runners have already had experience over fences but it's one who is making his debut over the bigger obstacles that makes most appeal. Earthmoves showed a decent level of form over hurdles the season before last and was only seen once last season. He was pulled up at Chepstow after suffering a hind tendon injury and missed the rest of the campaign. His return over hurdles at Sandown earlier this month showed that all his ability remains and it's likely he has been well schooled for this test. A half brother to the stable's Ptit Zig, he could be suited by today's step up in trip and he seems to act on any ground. He wouldn't need to improve on his hurdling form to get competitive and his all conquering yard have a 31% strike rate here in recent seasons.

2.20 - Taunton - Auenwirbel. 1 pt e/w. Available at 16/1.

3.15 - Towcester - Lock Towers. 2 pts win. Available at 13/2.

6.25 - Chelmsford:
Primrose Valley. 1.5 pts win. Available at 8/1.
Diamond Lady. 0.5 pts e/w. Available at 50/1.

The race is tomorrow but I've backed it today so technically it falls into the "what are you backing today" category.

Behind Time won on the Greatwood card with any amount in hand and he was considerably green the whole way round so he's open to plenty of improvement.

That was off a mark of 115 and as it was a conditionals race he escapes a penalty and runs off the same mark tomorrow. He was strongest at the finish there so seems sure to relish the extra 3f.

Keiron Edgar keeps the ride and in taking off 3lb allows the horse to run here off 9st13lb.

Harry Fry was quoted straight after the race as saying they'll try to find something in the next 12 days for him before his new mark kicks in, the twelfth day is tomorrow and his new mark is 128 so he's officially 16lb well in here including the jockey's claim.

There are some decent horses in opposition, not least the returning Shantou Bob and six-timer chasing El Bandit but I find it incredibly hard to imagine them giving two stone to the JP horse.

Just nabbed some of the odds against with Betfair.

My bets [1pt win on each @ BOG]

12.40 Newcastle-Dream Team @ 11-2 [Bet 365]
2.35 Doncaster-Special Catch @ 9-2 [Bet 365]
3.50 Newbury-Any Drama @ 7-2 [Bet 365]

Terrible yesterday, can't do any worse.

Today's Selections:

1.05 - Newbury - Remiluc. 2.5 pts win. Available at 9/2.
Sirabad finally unleashed his potentially when winning easily last week at Wincanton. He is still two pound well in with a seven pound penalty and, if he improves again, he could be difficult to beat but this is a better race and there are viable alternatives. Preference among the others is for Remiluc. He showed a decent level of form as a Novice Hurdler last season and improved for his reappearance at Fontwell by easily winning at the same track last time out. That has seen his mark rocket up to 132 and, if he translate that ability to fences, he would be very well handicapped here off 120.

2.00 - Doncaster - Duke Arcadio. 1.5 pts win. Available at 15/2.
Several of these have plenty of potential as Chasers. Making his debut over fences, Duke Arcadio, could be well handicapped if he repeats his effort in a Maiden hurdle when last seen in February. He has the looks and breeding to be effective in this sphere and he is with a yard who have a 17% strike rate with their Chasers in handicaps in recent seasons. The step up in trip should illicit further improvement from this former Irish Point winner and he will have no problem with underfoot conditions. The Trainer sends just the one to the races today and the jockey turns up for just the one booked ride.

2.10 - Newbury:
The Romford Pele. 1 pt win. Available at 11/1.
Ubak. 1 pt win. Available at 11/1.

3.20 - Newbury - Solomon Grundy. 2 pts win. Available at 13/2.

I nearly took another spanking but Solomon Grundy pulled me out of the proverbial.

My bets [1pt win on each @ BOG]

12.05 Newcastle-Dubai Angel @ 13-8 [Skybet]
1.05 Bangor-Derrintogher Bliss @ 5-2 [Boylesports]
1.10 Newcastle-Doubledisdoubledat @ 7-1 [Bet Bright]
1.40 Bangor-Moorstown @ 3-1 [Bet 365]
2.20 Newcastle-Dan Emmett @ 15-2 [Bet 365]
2.30 Doncaster-Cornborough @ 5-1 [Bet 365]
2.50 Bangor-Nordic Nymph @ 9-4 [Bet 365]
2.55 Newcastle-Apple's Jade @ 9-4 [Coral]

Bristol De Mai (3.30 N/C) should come on a bundle for today's step up in trip and softer ground, and looks a solid bet at the current 4/1.
