1.30 - Newbury - Shanty Town. 0.75 pts e/w. Available at 16/1.
Justification, Western Climate and Hello George could be difficult to keep out of the frame but a chance is taken that Shanty Town can get amongst them. He is a very lightly raced eight year old who was an encouraging third on his return from a mammoth 28 month absence at Wetherby last time out. He steps into handicap company for the first time today and his initial mark of 120 is by no means generous. He will need to improve quite a bit to get competitive but there must be a chance that he is quite capable of doing so. He caught the eye of the Stewards when tenderly handled at Kempton on his final start before his absence and give the impression that he has a fair amount of untapped potential. He showed his effectiveness on soft ground at Wetherby and this is just his second start for his current yard.

2.05 - Newbury - Goulanes. 1 pt e/w. Available at 12/1.
A Chase for veterans and one in which there are a number who would like to lead. An above average pace could make this a dour test in the conditions and that may suit Harry Topper who is strong at the head of the market. Shotavodka waltzed away with this race last season and he is weighted for a repeat but a chance is taken on the lightly raced Goulanes. He has obviously had plenty of problems, he has only made the track nine time and he is now eleven years old, but he is a horse who has shown a fair amount of ability in his time. He returned from a near three year absence to run in the Welsh National in December and, although eventually pulling up, he did travel well to a point and that may have blown the cobwebs away. This should tell us much more about how much ability remains. He is weighted to run well, being three pounds lower than winning the Midlands National back in 2014, and this is just his second start for his current Trainer.

3.15 - Newbury - Dresden. 1 pt e/w. Available at 12/1.
Dresden was beaten just over two lengths by Oldgrangewood on his penultimate start but the winner was value for more and an eight pound turnaround in the weights probably wouldn't be enough to turn the tables. However he is a horse who responds well to pressure from the saddle and the booking of Richard Johnson means he will get plenty of it. He followed up his Wetherby effort by going close at Warwick last time out and, although thoroughly exposed, he hasn't had many chances over this sort of trip. He is two pounds lower than for his last victory and he is versatile regarding ground conditions.

3.35 - Doncaster - Looking Well. 2 pts win. Available at 11/2.

4.10 - Doncaster - Thumb Stone Blues. 3 pts win. Available at 7/4.

Soft/heavy ground and a big drop in class might see a big run from Melodic Rendezvous worth a few quid EW in this company

Melodic Rendezvous seemingly not suited by having to make his own running there

May affect your selections today

JUMPING will be at less of a premium on Monday after rain on Sunday and overnight forced fences and hurdles to be omitted at the day's two jumps meetings.
The going at Lingfield is now heavy - from heavy, soft in places - after 8.5mm rain on Sunday and consequently they will be bypassing fences in the back straight.
In the 2m chase the runners will now jump eight of 12 fences, while in the 2m7f chase they will jump ten of the 18 fences.
It is a similar situation over at Southwell, where the going is now soft, heavy in places - from good to soft, soft in places - after 7mm of rainfall.
The first fence and hurdle in the back straight will be omitted for all races. In the 1m7½f chase they will jump 11 of the 12 and in the 3m chase they will jump 17 of the 19, while in the hurdles races they will jump eight of nine in the 1m7½f, nine of 11 in the two 2m4½f contests and 11 of 13 in the 3m hurdle.
The overnight rain has resulted in six non-runners at Southwell, but none so far at Lingfield. Wolverhampton's all-weather fixture also has two non-runners.

4.00 - Southwell - Pearl Royale. 2 pts win. Available at 4/1.
Magic Dancer has won twice on ground described as soft so for connections to take him out of a race he looked capable of winning on account of underfoot conditions gives some indication of how testing the going is likely to prove. In his absence preference is for Pearl Royale who has yet to score in five attempts but has performed well on each start. There was plenty to like about her efforts in three Bumpers, the best of which was a near eight length fifth of nineteen to the talented My Khaleesi in a Mares Listed race at Cheltenham in November. She has carried that promise over to her two starts over hurdles where she has finished second on both occasions. There is substance to the form of both races with some of the horses finishing around her franking the efforts since. She looks very reasonably treated on a mark of 112 for this handicap debut and has proven herself in testing ground at around today's trip. After just 2 victories from 95 entries from October to the end of January, the yard have returned a 6 from 35 record since the start of February (3 winners and 4 placed from 16 entries in the past 14 days). They have a profitable 22% strike rate (4 from 18) with their hurdlers at this track in recent seasons and send just the one here from their Devon base, a 436 mile round trip. The talented Sean Bowen takes over in the saddle and he turns up for just the one booked ride.

4.50 - Lingfield - Point N Shoot. 1.5 pts e/w. Available at 15/2.
Burgess Dream has form figures of 22121 on heavy ground under rules and, on those figures alone, he is entitled to plenty of respect but preference is for the bigger priced Point N Shoot. He is the second of the horses sent out by Nigel Hawke this afternoon (stablemate of Pearl Royale) and the only representative of the yard at the track. He has a 386 mile round trip to endure and, like Pearl Royale, he is partnered by a talented jockey turning up for his only booked ride, in this case the three pound claiming Ciaran Gethings. Point N Shoot was well beaten in three Novice/Maiden starts over hurdles, all at Chepstow at up to an extended 19 furlongs, but did show improvement from race to race and made his handicap debut from a mark of 92 upped in trip over this C/D in January. He was beaten ten lengths by the aforementioned Burgess Dream, with Flugzeug four lengths in front of him in second, but he made some good late gains and looked ridden to get the trip. He is twenty pounds better off with the winner, who has improved to win again since, and five pounds better off with the second. He will need to build on that effort but, given a more positive ride, he looks capable of doing so. On the downside he has been tailed off and pulled up at Southwell since and he will need to leave that performance well behind if he is to get competitive here. It's possible that he didn't take to the first time cheekpieces (left off today) and it's at least encouraging that connections are prepared to take on two horses that already hold a decision over their representative.

1 point win double.

2.20 - Exeter - Ben Arthur. 3 pts win. Available at 7/2.
Nigel Hawke's horses did us a favour yesterday and he sends just the one to the races today. Midnight Request is vying for favouritism in this race but he is not sure to appreciate this trip in the prevailing conditions. His three wins have come over slightly further but they were on better ground and he may not stay as well as some on heavy going on a stiff track. Preference is for Ben Arthur, even though he has been weak in the early morning markets. A former Irish Point winner, he was well beaten in three Maiden/Novice races at around two miles before stepping up half a mile for his handicap debut at Ffos Las last month. From an initial mark of 99 he was a narrow winner in soft ground and there is some substance to the form. The second was leading when falling at the last next time out and the fourth has subsequently been successful. It's low level form that's nothing to get excited about, and Ben Arthur has to defy a six pound ride in the weights, but this further step up in trip could illicit more improvement and he represents a yard who are in good form (13 from 55 since the start of February, 7 wins and 7 placed from 27 starts in the past two weeks). Both the Trainer and Jockey turn up with just the one booked entry.

3.30 - Southwell - Red Touch. 0.75 pts e/w. Available at 16/1.
Many of the twelve remaining runners in this race handle this surface well and make it a competitive affair. Zorovan, Shearian and Aqua Ardens head the market but, at a much bigger price, it may be worth risking that Red Touch can make the frame at least. He was claimed by his current Trainer for £3000 after finishing last of four in a C/D Claimer 13 months ago and immediately set about giving connections a return on their investment. He won his next two here, over 7/8 furlongs, before going close in his hat-trick bid over a mile here this time last year. He wasn't as good on his next two starts on Tapeta at Wolverhampton and Newcastle and was put away afterwards. He returned to this track over seven furlongs here in January and ran a reasonable race, finishing in midfield after making late gains. Given the promise of that first run after a break he was disappointing back at Newcastle last time out and the hood goes on for the first time today. Back on the track he has produced his best three performances he could return to form from a mark which looks feasible.

3.50 - Exeter - Quinto. 2 pts win. Available at 9/2.

4.30 - Southwell - Viva Verglas. 1.5 pts e/w. Available at 9/1.
