The Road to the Grand National 2010

I've got a place bet on MM at about 4.80 or so - would be surprised if he can win under that weight but stamina will count in this renewal more than in some imo and he has plenty. Waiting to see who will ride Character Building - who hasn't got a ride yet??!

Not looking good across the water

Grey, that is an extraordinary and truly shocking statement from the rep of Paddy Power and makes me feel like closing my account. Not that they would notice! I thought PP looked after its racing clients (specials etc) because its owners had a love of racing as a sport - how naive. Is nothing sacred

    Older Flat Horses 2010

Saw Simon Earle at the Open Meeting with a runner, have not seen him since. I think maybe he is mainly doing hunter-chasing and pointing now?

    Townend

Agreed, and how G&S went off so much longer than Jayo today, given G&S had his preferred ground, and the beating of Jayo on all form, I will never know - I guess it was the 'back Ruby blindf' faction, not understanding that G&S is Townend's ride? Did some of us a favour anyway!

    The 2000 Guineas (and beyond)

There was almost nothing between the first four in the Dewhurst, and Xtension was hampered at the start. The horse won fto last year in May; agreed he was easily beaten by CC over 6f, but CC is imo a sprinter. Clive is a very patient man and will have left plenty to work on. I took 36 over the...

    Des Scahill

Came on to see if Dun Doire survived, didn;t look good as Katie W walked off quite quickly. Anyway: re Golden Silver - I had backed him but wasn't watching him that closely, as he was going fine just in behind the leaders - I was following the figs on Betfair - so I looked up sharpish when Des...

Changes to end of season - my suggestion

I agree that the course is a problem - it's dire when it's cold and I've been to the last 5 Champions' Days at least, and Sat was by far the coldest! it was nearly dark for a lot of the afternoon. (Friday weather wasn't bad though til it got cold late on). It's mad to charge £40 for flat racing...

    2 Year olds 2009

It's true that Xtension is not all that big and may not have the scope of some of the Ballydoyle horsee (and others). But Clive is very canny when it comes to setting a target and pulling one off, and he very nearly pulled off the Dewhurst. Hope springs eternal!

    2000 Guineas

    Can't resist re-posting this! Prescient, BtheB :D

    Champions Day

Good news, thanks - as one would expect.

    2000 Guineas

I've just been back and checked the pics I took as they went out, and indeed Fencing Master is noticeably gross, and Beethoven imo not far behind! (I did notice that on the day, whilst I wasn't looking that hard at FM). Steinbeck looks relatively normal Re Dundalk, it is probalby the newness...

    2 Year olds 2009

Same point made - with emphasis - by Clive Cox!

    Champions Day

Fame was frothing at the mouth all the way round the PR pre-race - I've got a number of pics and in only one does he not have froth dripping from his mouth. But maybe he always does that? My impression was he didn't look a happy horse at all - ie it looked like he'd had enough for the year and...

    Champions Day

Exactly - the sad thing is, it's not a top quality race any way you look at it. Hard to get really excited about. There could be a surprise, but it would not mean much! There's nothing of the calibre of New Approach this year - it's the weakest field for years in fact

    Kieren Fallon

I woudl have liked to have seen Fallon refuse the offer tbh - Fortune is yard jockey. It's really bad. And likely to foment jealousy and resentment too... Interesting that Fallon has gone back to the BHA for clarification on precisely what he can and can't say to whom, aobut his rides. It must...

    Friday

I'm off there right now. Is anyone else really pee'd off that these two meetings clash?

    Champions Day

That's my reading of the race too, and I've backed accordingly. I can't really see any other threat to F&G even though I believe he won't run to his best

    Departures 2009

I tto think crazyhorse and you others have hit the nail on the head. Flat bred horses are not just going hurdling now either, they go chasing, and the percussion from firmish ground on more fragile legs is bound to be greater over fences than hurdles since the horse lands more steeply, putting...

    Harchibald

Report of the race states that Meade's instructions to Carberry were to 'get the horse round' and that's what it looked like to me - Harchi was looked after today to make sure he measured his jumps and knew he was doing osmething different from usual. He fluffed the last slightly under...

    Sizing Europe

I'm a massive fan of the horse too - always have been since I first saw him win at Newbury in 2006 [I backed him which helps the memory!]. It was always clear he needed fences. I hope he'll turn out to be as good as some of us always thought Feeling really pee'd orf today I didn't do the double...
