Probably the toughest beat I've ever had. Was on the 2nd for 12K.
Blimey, Slim, and I thought I had cause to cry Hope you had a bit of place money to ease the pain

I lost a small fortune on the race :
Bogstar 1940.
First novice since Rule The World and Mr What.
Always said you could back Sam blind around Aintree but did not listen to my guide dog today !
Great race, great ride.
happy retirement Sam.
Hard to take, Slim; particularly behind a 50/1 shot. Layers cleaned up, before and afterwards.Probably the toughest beat I've ever had. Was on the 2nd for 12K.

Sam Waley-Cohen banned for 9 days and fined £400 for misuse of the whip.
So glad - no offence, Slim - that ASN didn't win. That would have been a nightmare for me.
Should be disqualified, then.
I wouldn't want to be a cat anywhere near Slim this morning. I would find it particularly hard to take but I was wondering if the jockey on the runner-up broke the rules too?
It’s tough to take a loss when the jockey on the winner has broken the rules even when I had only a very tiny fraction of the amount Slim had on Any Second Now.
Also felt cheated in the Foxhunter at Cheltenham when I’d backed the 2nd and Patrick Mullins got several days for his ride on the winner
A change in the rules to make punishment for whip abuse more meaningful can’t come soon enough IMO. A nine day ban and £400 fine for SWC is frankly laughable. Of course the ban means nothing as he’s now retired
Plenty will say the owners shouldn’t suffer because of the actions of the jockey but I don’t think they should benefit from rule breaking either

Just wanted to apologise to Slim for this remark. I was too wrapped up in my opposition to the horse as a value bet to appreciate what was riding on the outcome.

The winner winning like a young unexposed type has certainly affected my opinion of the type of horse needed for the modern day Grand National.
It was the equivalent of a flat horse running in three maidens then stepping up to win the Ebor or some other showcase handicap.
At least next year I know what I am looking for!
How much weight does the horse have to carry with this 3lb allowance for the body armour and 3 lb for covid.
JP McManus said in an interview Minella times would be carrying 12.2.
I've watched the race again and had a look through the result.
It looks to me like the first four have pretty much run to form and everything else, for whatever reason, has underperformed to varying degrees, probably due to a lack of stamina as opposed to being badly handicapped.
A couple of points, though:
Earlier in the thread I said I looked for something that had the class to post at least a 160 rating. RPRs go 160 for Noble Yeats and 170 for ASN.
They only go 156 for Delta Work but also not far back in the thread I said I went for half a point/pound per length (as opposed to one per length. If you take Delta Work's 22L defeat as 11lbs, it puts him on a rating of around 162, within a pound of what I'd said was his performance in the x-country.
Santini has run to around the same mark as his two previous runs so the conclusion has to be that this is now his level. Personally, I think they should either retire him or send him down the hunters route.
This was as much a case of last man standing as of two great horses being so much better than the others.
The chances are Noble Yeats will go up to 160 for the win. Any less will be a bonus but the chances are when/if he turns up next year that will be his mark, which would be around the 11-9 mark in this year's race. But he'll be a second-season novice next year and could well improve 10lbs by then, which would put him the same ball-park as yesterday. I'd say even at this early stage he has to be short-list material to double up.
Handicapping is subjective. Needless to say I don't agree.
