Bloodstock 2011

Reckon she's going to be too dog ugly to sell, so may have to!!

Seriously, we would like to lease her to race and keep her to breed from in the vain hope she'll be able to replace her Mama.

Been a trying day, as Songy was very slow to cleanse and it's very dangerous for mares to retain the afterbirth for more than a few hours. Covered her with a lot of antibios, gave her a jab of oxytocin this morning but nothing, so vet out this afternoon, more a/bs, more oxy, turned them both out for half an hour til about 6pm and hey presto, afterbirth dumped ten minutes after coming in, so job done.

Hope you've all eaten your meal......

Enjoyed that - thanks! Will be over as soon as I get 5 mins which is looking like middle of June at this rate!

Not trying to gross-out anyone, Songy, but do you just leave the afterbirth for foxes and crows to snack on ("I'll have it with a glass of Merlot, waiter") or do you have to burn it? Glad she dropped it eventually, even if the vet fees just shot up!

Good to have another person on here involved in breeding, OCP. MISS GLORY BE was a good little campaigner on the old dirt, handy sprinter. As I see she's now 13, have you bred quite a few from her since she left racing? Congrats on getting a colt as well. I like TOBOUGG - shortlisted him once for a mare I shared with Songsheet, who's on here and not that far away from you, in Somerset. She's just produced a large filly from her mare, SONGSHEET, by BAHAMIAN BOUNTY - check out the Bloodstock section on here and enjoy yourself!

Getting rid of cleansings round here is an art form - our dogs are always no the hunt for tasty delicacy's such as those! Usually they go in Merlo (telehandler, not large glass of wine - that would have a T on the end of it:lol:) bucket and get dumped in the slurry pit. Or chucked into the wood - I'm all for foxes or badgers gettng a free meal from it !

The dismissal of the placental fluid idea by the UK guy maybe shortsighted. I don't know how many others on here have had to deal with foalings / calvings but I can tell you that when you get the fluid over your hands, boy do you know it! Doesn't make the skin sore or anything but does make it feel tight, so I guess that's why they use it. Never thought of it in a beneficial way but wouldn't diss that at all!

excellent I have a 2 y/o filly out of my own mare Miss Glory Be,
I have a Cockney Rebel 2y/o colt
I am just choosing a stallion to send my mare to this week
actually, I'm stuck between Tobougg and Schiaparelli
any ideas around £3k in the south west area?

Hi and welcome!

Have you checked out HELLVELYN for your mare ? I see she's one of those really decent tough handicappers that obviously gave her owners a great time, like SONGSHEET. All being well post foaling, I'm walking SONGSHEET in to him this season. Another member on here has already got her mare in foal to him - PETROVNA. Again, a sound winning handicapper. He's very good looking, might suit her ? I'f you're interested, PM me - deals to be done !!

Ooh... could it be an alternative to Botox, Songy? I can see it tightening up jowls and wrinkles a treat. Now there's something for Poleshill to specialise in next... I can see jars of it being marketed at the next big county show!

I read somewhere that Preparation H also smoothes out wrinkles and tightens, er, things up. So, there's possibly some truth to the phrase "a face like a slapped backside".

I was just thinking of Preparation H ! We were at the Irish National Stud a few years back and a mare had just finished foaling [I don't think we were supposed to be where we were]. They came out of the stable with a bucket full of stuff..I assumed that they had to check that it was 'all there' whatever the 'all' was. If the mare had had antibiotics because the afterbirth hadn't come away, would that make it a bit toxic for other animals to eat or would the fox, bird, dog population be free of colds, coughs and sneezes for the forseeable future?

Something else I've just thought - wonder if TARTAN BEARER (flogged off by Ballymacoll) had actually landed to assume duties in Libya, poor bugger? The horrible thing about conflicts are the animal deaths which are incurred, if not from outright bombings, missile strikes and shootings, then from being abandoned and left to starve. This was brought home by the amount of once-happy pet dogs which departing Americans abandoned in Saudi when the (real) Gulf War began. They banded together in very mixed packs, becoming feral, most being eventually rescued by the Arabian Kennel Club and vets. What was surprising was how quickly they turned to pack instinct, even though some were fancy pure breeds and devoted family dogs previously.

Although I like Tobougg, I'd definitely go for Double Trigger over him - much cheaper, turns out nice horses even if they can be late to mature, and guaranteed stamina. Double Trigger produces flashy types as well.

Hasn't done much on the Flat, though, has he and I got the impression that's the primary aim. TOBOUGG has a good record on that score.

If you fancied going further afield, I wouldn't rule out CAPTIAN RIO. They are very good looking and stamina strangely seems to appear when you wouldn't expect it to. Tough too, which is always a consideration.

yes Songsheet flat at around 7f to 1 mile is the intention for progeny at 3 y/o for a flat campaign with the long term potential of national hunt at 5 y/o
I'm still looking at Schiaparelli, the first season sire at overbury!
I popped up today and viewed him, and while I was there I saw the other stallions, Kayf Tara looked great this is one I would definitely use if I was looking for a stayer, the son of sadlers wells is top drawer!

Well, yeah, you would use KAYF TARA for staying, as he's the 2009/10 leading NH sire! But TOBOUGG's a snip @ just £2,500 (max) and he's begotten the useful BOUGGLER, SAVE MY BLUSHES (G3 chase win) and poor wee SHALONE, who crashed horribly at Cheltenham, but lives to try again. I don't know what others think, but for a cheap NH sire, PASTERNAK looks value @ £1,250 - with UK and French progeny winning like LITTLE JOSH (G3 Chelt Paddy Power Gold Cup Ch), CAMDEN GEORGE, SPA WELLS, etc. - and he's not too far away, in Glos.

funny you should bring up Pasternak! he was standing with helissio when I sent my mare to Ireland to Scarvagh stud three years ago, he also came over to larkinglass stud to stand with Helissio when Alfred Buller wound up Scarvagh Stud,

Well, pedigrees so often prove us wrong but I simply cannot see SCHIAPERELLI doing the business between 7 -8f ! He's a proper potential NH stallion for sure - which is why he's at Overbury, I guess. Great pedigree for proper stayers, though. Haven't seen the horse but guess he's very good looking. I very much like Simon Sweeting - he certainly looked after my maiden mare well when she went there a few years ago.

As you're obviously breeding to race, OCP, you have the luxury of sidestepping the need to be commercial, which is a great position to be in. Hope whatever you choose, it all goes well!

I wouldn't touch Pasternak with a shitty stick, nor Captain Rio if you've an eye for NH or want any stamina, it was a 6f sprinter, for God's sake!

As there was an emphasis put on wanting a sire that would impart stamina and would go jumping, I suggested Double Trigger as he fits that bill. The horse is value at £1750 as well.

Captain Rio's wouldn't be the first sprinter to pass on stamina to the right mares. Danehill and Danehill Dancer being the obvious examples. The latter even gets the odd 3m chaser.

And 7f horse Anshan knocks out a fair few 3m hurdlers (Asian Maze, Powerstation) and Grand National contenders (McKelvey, Grand Slam Hero).

Regarding Captain Rio, the fact that his best son is a 10f horse, that his sire can get Cheltenham winners (Final Approach) and that his sire's best horse (allowing for wfa) was a 12f horse (Sariska) suggests to me that it is not a ridiculous proposition.
