Cheltenham 2016

The 2m novice chase will be a cracker if a few of these entries hold, though I'm not sure I'm liking the restated race distances?

I'm all for accuracy, but that novice chase is advertised as being over 1m7f199yds, and the other novice chase on the card is advertised over 3m80yds. Why not just move the fecking starting-gates to make the races 2m and 3m on the dot??

I thought tickets for the Festival went up in December [that's when we usually hear from them]. Haven't decided how many days to go for yet.

Ticket prices for The Festival increase closer to the event. The first prices will increase at midnight on Saturday 24th October, with prices increasing again at midnight on Sunday 15th November, midnight on Friday 29th January and finally on Sunday 13th March.

Thanks DG; trouble is, if we buy tickets for just the Tuesday [when we're definitely going] we'll have to pay again for booking and recorded delivery postage if we decide to go on the Wednesday as well. May have to make a decision [not good at doing that!].

Fair bit of rain overnight, mind you Claisse says going will be fast side of good especially at the top bend. Despite a dry Autumn the water table is the highest it's been for five years.

Some more bits of news

The Relkeel Hurdle moves from the International meeting in December to the New Year's Day meeting

The cross country chase at The Festival 2016 is to be run off level weights, November's race at the Open meeting is now a handicap, with the December race for the International meeting becoming a conditions race.

Horses will now have to finish in the first six of a qualifier to be able to run in the Pertemps Final, rather than the first eight.

The new Grade 2 Trull House Stud mares' novices' hurdle will be registered as the Dawn Run Novices' Hurdle. The new race will be staged on the third day of the festival.

There will be 40 minutes between races. This will mean racing will still start at 1.30 on each of the four days, but the card will finish at 5.30.

the 40 mins move is a very obvious push towards a 5 days festival - 6 race card only due to light etc... It also ensures more turnover per race for Bookies to help them pay for increased pitch costs.

40 minutes between races is too much for the stay at home punter and possibly the tv stations-will the racecourse care.Definitely part of the push towards 5 days-will it be a bold move copied by major race days around the world or unpopular with punters at home and on the course.

Given that Royal Ascot has 35 minute gaps and the Cheltenham races each take 5 minutes longer than RA, it's defensible. What wouldn't be defensible would be races going off more than a minute or two late.

Don't think last race at The Festival at 5.30pm would have bad light issues, I'm pretty sure the Festival Bumper was run at 5.50pm for a number of years.

All races are run 40 minutes apart at the Grade 1 tracks in Australia. Personally I found it much more pleasant and less of a rush around the place so I'd like to see it at all the Festivals and bigger weekend race meetings.

Members bar, in the new stand, ready for tomorrow

OK initial thoughts

Outside, touts still in evidence and cars driving up the road past the stables and the back of the stands to the parking area which supposedly not allowed this season for safety reasons.

Plenty of space inside, large crowds should be more comfortable at future meetings and plenty of access for viewing the parade ring. The crescent walkway from the back of the new stand to the top tier has five steps so even more room than I imagined beforehand.

Within ten minutes of the gates opening all the tables in the members bar looking out onto the course ( as in photo above) were full and it was evident most of the occupants were intent on sitting there all day even if not buying food and drink from the bar. The room is L shaped and there were a few seats left round the corner. Food quite pricey really £5.50 for cup of soup , £12.50 for one course roast beef and sandwiches, baguettes etc around £7. We went into the Mandarin bar instead which has doors through from members bar via a champagne bar, and that has been revamped a bit, the window in the corner above the Arkle bar has gone and there are a few high tables for standing with a coffee or whatever. Prices for food and drink matched those in the members bar.

Down below in the Vesty bar plenty of food and drink and plenty of room, reminded me a bit of the Sandown hall under their stand. Plenty of toilets on course now.

The big screen at the bottom of the parade ring now has viewing on both sides, so can be easily seen from the plaza area as well. Down below that were a large hospitality room and quite a few shops which are not usually there for an October meeting. The Injured Jockeys Fund now has its own dedicated stall on the back of the old grandstand as do the the Cotswold Riding For The Disabled Stall and the Book Stand where Henrietta Knight was signing books today.

There was a food and drink show going on in the Centaur concert hall although they still had the racing on the big screen.

All in all a pleasant experience, didn't catch up with Roddy and although Pearl Swan didn't feature in his race, he did at least deservedly win best turned out.

According to the yobs I know who where there today, the big news was that a pint was costing £5 /€7 for the first time.

Here's some pics from yesterday:
