Derby/ Oaks

Diamondsandrubies was surely hampered badly enough to think she would have been closer, not to the front pair but to Lady of Dubai surely?

Yes sure, she may have snatched 3rd ( not an each way gambler unless I know who'll win):)

Read online winner ran in same colours as Gentilhombre. Remember him? That great little sprinter.

Meanwhile in the last Simon Crisford quietly saddled his 4th winner from only 7 starts (in the UK - not sure how many he had in Dubai) - be interesting to keep an eye on his progress. Fairly ordinary bunch so far but its a pretty good start!

Well how didn't we see that coming.

The runner up will probably be at her best over 10f.

So, what wins the Derby EC? Whats the ratings perspective?

My original selection Zawraq has been pulled out, which is a shame as he was my strongest fancy so far this season.

i went into some detail a page or two back..basically..Giovanni Canoletto..easily:)

todays race was disappointing with the fav not running her best due to wasting energy before the race and many underperforming or bumping into each other.

Agreed; she has to be of serious interest for the Irish Oaks I would have thought.

Not sure how 'unlucky' she was today; she was murdered by Together Forever, but there was a gap 2f out and she didn't have the pace to go through it. A stronger gallop at a track like the Curragh should be right up her street though.

I have something in my mind about Fastnet Rock though that I don't particularly like - a lot of his progeny seemed to get tapped for toe (or race lazily) it seems. How is he getting on as a stallion, Miesque?

Very poorly in Europe (Although Fascinating Rock and Qualify say otherwise for this season), he is flying down under having sired the Queensland Derby winner over night to top off his European Classic success. Coolmore didn't bring him back to Ireland for 2015, they may be reconsidering in 2016.

Well he's certainly bred for the job and you make some interesting points. I might just Dutch all the Coolmore/Ballydoyle horses.... Seems the sensible thing to do these days!! I do think hans Holbein looks overpriced.

Wouldn't worry too much Euro - with the ground quickening up, there's little likely to get near the fav, imo.

front 2 very good, rest below average would be my fairly obvious take of the renewal but time will tell.

A much better race than any of us gave it credit for beforehand.
Delighted for connections of the top three.
No excuses anywhere else bar Rosewell House and D K Weld.
Cape Cross a bit like Great Nephew in that he can produce a top horse every five years just when you would be writing him off.

A straightforward reprise of the Dante, run at a good pace and the cream rising to the top in the closing stages. Once again, Coolmore proved they have little idea of how to draw others into going too quick for their own good, and - as in so many top races previously - their hare was largely ignored by the rest of the field.
Rather than lacking the stamina that so many predicted, Golden Horn actually looked tapped for speed around 2 out, but ran on like a lion once he picked up. I'd certainly have reservations about him as a future 10f star.

Can't blame them for trying Reet they were clearly up against it. AOB obviously felt Hals Holbein wouldn't get the trip so he was sacrificed in the hope the Gosden pair didn't stay.

Giovanni Canaletto head in the air again did manage 4th but was clearly beaten by Stars who was beaten by Hans Holdbein at Chester so the pair are probably of similar ability

Golden Horn did hit a flat spot and I though Jack Hobbs was going to hack up but that hitting a flat spot could have been down to the course undulations and cambers rather than any lack of ability on
Golden Horn's part.

I would have thought a drop back to 10f as he has bags of speed is a certainty and then head to the Breeders which John Gosden seems to like.

Jack Hobbs on the other hand looks an ideal type for the Arc, he has lots of scope and could improve big time between now and then.

The King George has to be the on the agenda for him, Personally my favourite race of the season.
