That Jeremy filly that won for Dermot Weld at Leopardstown, Yellow Rosebud, looked seriously smart winning FTO.

He's off to a smart start - very likeable horse, I always thought, so pleased for him. Lots more romantic dates for him at this rate.

He's a real looker, out of a half sis to Deep impact.Champion first Season Sire in Japan last year and a rake of stakes horses already.

Splendid, Colly - having donated most of my breeding books I don't have the Stallions one any more. That's a very reasonable fee indeed for the early results people seem to be getting. I guess being INS-based the fees can be kept down to an attractive rate, to encourage breeders.

Kri, this information is available on the Racing Post site.

Search box on the top right, enter the name of the stallion, select stallion from the drop-down menu and search.

A facility I use quite a lot.

Our blogger predicts fireworks from Teofilo's offspring later in the year...

With a lull in top-class proceedings on the Flat in Britain and Ireland, I thought now would be a good time to revisit the subject of first-season sires, covered in an earlier blog.

As at the end of play on June 28, the number of wins recorded by the principal "freshman" sires were as follows:

Dark Angel 14
Dutch Art 12
Red Clubs 8
Excellent Art 7
Amadeus Wolf 7
Teofilo 6
Lawman 4
Cockney Rebel 4
Hard Spun 4

And the "scores on the doors" for our intrepid bloodstock tipsters were:

John Ingles +13
James Willoughby +13
Emma Berry +6
Kevin Sommerville +6
Alan Mosley +2
Sid Fernando +1
Stephen Heath -4
Janet Hickman -5

The competition, as Janet and Stephen would no doubt point out, is a marathon not a sprint. I hope that they (though not necessarily the offspring of their selections) have reserves of stamina reminiscent of Fame And Glory not Frankel.

Whether you have a flutter in the first-season sires market or not, knowledge of new stallions is an important factor in betting on two-year-olds. If you do not know your Teofilos from your Moss Vales you are likely to pay the price.

Timeform has long used breeding statistics to inform its assessments of lightly-raced horses, and much of the important information is to be found in the Timeform Statistical Review. The 2010 edition showed sires with median ratings for offspring of between 31 (Beckett and Needwood Blade) and 90 (Storm Cat).

These figures - either alone or combined with other factors such as training standards - can be used as a proxy for rateable form when horses are just setting out.

The current Timeform median ratings for first-season sires with 10 or more runners make for interesting reading and suggest that the battle for the title of Champion Freshman Sire is by no means over.

Teofilo (14 runners) 83 median Timeform rating
Excellent Art (14 runners) 75.5
Dutch Art (23 runners) 71
Cockney Rebel (12 runners) 70
Dark Angel (35 runners) 69
Amadeus Wolf (32 runners) 65
Red Clubs (42 runners) 58.5
Three Valleys (17 runners) 53
Strategic Prince (19 runners) 50
Moss Vale (15 runners) ---

Dark Angel has got to the top of the list for number of wins partly through quantity. He may stay there for that same reason, but in terms of quality his nearest pursuer, Dutch Art, ranks more highly, and Excellent Art and Teofilo rank higher still.

Teofilo's offspring, in particular, could really start to come into their own in the second half of the season over seven furlongs and more. In addition to his already-useful winnersMezmaar and Teolane, many of those yet to race fetched tidy sums at the sales and have been named and entered.

It should be worth looking out for the following of Teofilo's well-related and seemingly well-regarded sons and daughters: Al Mamzar (about whom David Simcock was bullish in a recent interview); Amira's Prince (David Wachman); Aquilla (Sir Henry Cecil); Clowance Estate (Roger Charlton); Filatore (entered in The Derby, Sir Michael Stoute); and Najm Kabir and Tajriba (both with Saeed bin Suroor).

Whether or not they can collectively take Teofilo to the top of the table remains to be seen, but they could well be names you hear more of, this year and next.

"Did I not break the Jeremy is a stallion to watch story months ago....."

Early April, Gearoid:

"Someone who knows a good 2yo from a bad one suggested a stallion that stands for around 2k was good value and he has a nice 2yo by him. I'm almost certain it was Jeremy but my head is gone today. Does Jeremy stand for around 2k and has he thrown a winner yet?"

His advertised fee was 6k you could have got him for 4k. 2k sounds low and the National stud wouldn't be on for bargaining too much. He's had a couple of nice winners that look like they could be better three yr olds. Princess Sinead and yellow rosebud. He still has to do it though.
