Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup

Tell you what tells me all I want to know. As you go into Nicholl's yard, the first box on the right is where Kauto Star used to be, the second box is where Denman used to be and Big Bucks is in the same block. I was told they were all there so they could keep an eye on their best horses from the office, which is immediately opposite.

Silviniaco Conti is in Denman's box and Rocky Creek is in Kauto Star's box.;)

Or it could mean Nicholls is struggling for talent. Much as I like Rocky Creek, I can't see him within 20lbs of either Kauto or Denman.

Interestingly enough 6 of the last 8 winners didn't have a prep race.

But only 8 of the last 24.

Possibly a result of the 'competitive racing initiative', before which winners were rarely penalised more than 7lb?

Apparently not. Winners raised by the following amounts prior to victory here, can't remember when this initiative came in: 0,12,0,4,6,4,4,17,0,6 in a spread from 1990 to 2004.

Looking at the list of horses I'd be thinking more in terms of well handicapped class horses - the 6 winners without a run in the last 8 years

Trabolgan (RSA winner) - 151
Denman twice (RSA winner & Gold Cup winner) 161 & 174
Diamond Harry - 156 (arguably assisted by top weight off 182 putting everything else out of the handicap)
State Of Play - 148
Bobs Worth - 160

Which may make Lord Windermere seem reasonably handicapped off 154 - if you think he's as good as State of Play and Diamond Harry say.

When do the weights come out?

I'd have thought they'd have been out long before now. A couple of weeks doesn't seem a long time for the ante-post market to get serious.

The main reason I'm asking is that 1833 might have a shout but would they want to kill his chances by hacking up today?

One horse that has had a run but looks to be about 14lbs in hand of its mark is Highland Lodge.

Have discussed this race on the "fast race" thread where i cobbled together a rough guide to the merits of its last run. Have had a go at compiling traditional speed figure of that complete meeting [Oct 27] and the figures i get are 127 for Standing Ovation....won easily off 120 yesterday...and about 150 for Highland Lodge.

Worth a shot at the prices

I like NTD's horse here. The fact he upheld his own winning form in the Kim Muir in his subsequent appearance at Sandown shows a bit of class, while the 2nd and 3rd, (Super Duty and Romanesco), have disappointed since, that race took something out of them. With the improvement he's shown in visors I've forgiven his last run, a nice e/w chance.
