King George Chase

Is it me or is this renewal a very poor tunout for what is considered to be the 2nd most prestiges race of the NH season.

I just can't get excited about it all all.:(

Can’t have that, Tanlic. The Gold Cup winner is in against two King George winners. It’s entirely representative for the race, imo, and in terms of recent renewals, probably only the Vautour/Cue Card/Don Cossack race was demonstrably (much) better.

While I’d like to have seen at least one of A Plus Tard, Allaho or Protektorat lining up, I still think it’s a quality renewal. Hopefully at least 8 make it to the start because while I’m on Clan ante post, prices like 5/1+ bar the front two offer excellent e/w value when certain bookies are paying on 4 Places.

Best King George I can remember is 1982 would make this one look like a Sedgefield handicap:(

I really don't like CDO although his first win was good and Frodon is not and never will be top class in my book

I'm obviously too young and beautiful to remember that far back.

Reckon Cheekpieces have improved CDO this year, and I'm guessing Minella Indo has them added because it's not considered a stiff enough test. Fascinating contest.

I think sometimes its after the race when you can say how good a renewal it was. Personally I'd be a bit disappointed if it was fought out by Frodon and CDO as could well be the case as you sort of know they aren't world beaters but they certainly set a decent standard around here. Personally I couldn't get my head around how Minella Indo won the Gold Cup but he did and I'd have it as a hell of a performance and a strong piece of form. I'd like to see him back it up here and put in the sort of performance that has us looking forward to a rematch between him and A plus tard. As with every year you have the 2m4f brigade stepping up in trip and the usual answer is they just don't get home but maybe the likes of Asterion, Tornado Flyer, Chantry house could come of age personally I doubt it. Like grassy I still hold out some hope for Saint Calvados after a breathing op and with a tongue tie maybe could help him get home as he travelled so well for a long way last year but again I'm struggling to believe it especially after such a long break getting him to settle might be a tough ask. Lost in Translation wouldn't be without a shout on his best form but again would be a disappointing winner.

As said Frodon and CDO set a fairly high standard around here and anything that could beat them and beat them well for me would command a fair bit of respect.

If you fancy Saint Calvados or Lost in Translation that says everything about the standard.

Imagine if Dessie Kauto of Burroughhill Lad were running any one of them would be 1/2 to beat this lot.

I'm backing ahorse that can't even jump

Gawd help racing if CDO or Frodon wins again and then run stinkers again in the Gold Cup

Best result for racing would be Minella Indo winning then going on to win a second Gold Cup but I just can't see it.

I think Chantry House is seriously underrated in this. He won the Marsh impressively (with Asterion Forlonge 5 lengths behind in third) and followed up at Aintree with another good win, albeit aided by the fall of Espoir De Romay. At Sandown this term it was only a two horse win, but a decent enough time and some good jumping. It is a stretch for him, of course, but I think he’ll compete. Henderson’s comments are a bit of a shock, though, when he says (I hope in jest) that CH is the main danger to Mister Fisher.

MISTER FISHER

This race has been the plan from some way back but we haven’t arrived here quite in the way we’d all have liked. The intention was to run in the Peterborough Chase, which would have set him up nicely for a crack at this prize, but unfortunately after several below-par work outs in the autumn we discovered he was suffering from a fibrillating heart which certainly explained why we weren’t seeing the real Mister Fisher. We took him straight to the equine hospital and thankfully everything was sorted pretty quickly. He only required a couple of weeks stable rest and then we were able to crack on with him and I’m very pleased to say that his work has been excellent ever since and we think we have the old Mister Fisher back. Obviously this is a massive task on his first run of the season, but he’s been away to work so is a fit as we can get him at home and on their running in Oaksey Chase at Sandown last April, there’s not much between him and Frodon. He’s ran once over this trip, in the Bowl at Aintree, but lost his jockey at the 12th fence so we have no idea what the outcome would have been, but I do think he’ll have no problem getting the trip and as long as the ground isn’t too testing, because he’s much better on good ground, he could quite possibly run a nice race at what will probably be big odds.

I've have been over the race many times and conclude the same as m'learned friend, Barjon. Chantry House (9/2) is the winner and Sir Nicky will shed a tear, (2/9).

Has the makings of a top race.
See More Business/ Desert Orchid/ Royal Marshall / Nupsala/Edredon Bleu/ Frodon all 16/1 or better in my time so don't be afraid to fancy a long one.
I would like to see Asteron take the next step but whatever wins wins.

I've done Lostintranslation 16/1.i think that's a bit of value.

Ah. Lostintranslation was my fifth horse in a 50p lucky 31 win bet which cost 15.50p this time last year.

I had the first four winners on Boxing Day including off the top of my head Killer Clown, Canelo, Shan Blue and Sliver Streak, which netted me 1K back which was great, but had the fifth horse Lostintranslation won the King George I was looking at about 15-20 grand.

I know he is a bit of a dodgy horse but on that day last season I felt he had as good a chance as anything.

One of those things. I won't forget that bet in a long time. A year on and I don't fancy anything at Kempton or Wetherby tomorrow.

Clan Des Obeaux is fav for this and this would e champion has started favourite almost a dozen times and won 4.

Minnela Indo won the Gold Cup because he stayed better than A Plus Tard. This trip on this course may prove too fast for him.

Frodon was a 20/1 outsider last year when the race fell apart...lightning wont strke twice

Chantry House steps up in Class or does he? I wouldn't put anyone off backing him.

Asterrion Forlonge has obvious jumping problems. He is very talented but these fences are the stiffest in the country.

Lostintranslation lacks the ability to keep up with these cant see him being in the 3.

Nothing look soutstanding so my final take I suggest Dutch Chantry House and Asterion Forlonge 11/4

Much as I would love to see Frodon (11/2) and Frost double up, I reckon third place might be the best they can achieve since surely they won’t give them a soft lead. Mister Fisher (40/1) took them along at Aintree when Clan Des Obeaux (3/1f) won impressively. Minella Indo (10/3) is lightly enough raced to improve again this season and probably won’t mind a killer pace. The first time cheekpieces are interesting. Chantry House (5/1) is the other interesting one, given that he’s a second-season novice and could improve a lot but I can let that price go. Asterion Forlonge (13/2) has the talent to be involved but doesn’t have a great completion ratio. If I have a bet, it will probably be Minella Indo.

I still haven't made a bet yet but Minella Indo at 4/1 is very tempting and I imagine a professional would think it an each-way steal.

I keeping looking at Saint Calvados and keep asking myself 'why'?

Why has Nicholls waited for this top class event to reintroduce it? He could have picked up a wee diddy race somewhere along the line as a prep. Maybe the horse needs to be bursting with freshness. I have no idea but 25/1 is a big enough price to make me want to pay to find out.

I’m sort of coming round to this viewpoint myself, Outsider, though I’ve already had a small ew bet on Asterion Forlonge, and a larger one on Saint Calvados, and probably won’t go back in again.
