Noted in running

I backed Maskada today as there seemed to be money going on it. Got pushed back early on; either a mistake or was impeded but supposedly was finishing really well. Didn't actually see the race, though but will keep an eye on it next time. Mind you, most things I back either 'didn't break well' [flat] or 'didn't jump the first very well' [jumps].

Bit frisky early on and stumbled badly at the second losing his action and dropping away to at least ten lengths behind the field. Still nearly last coming over the last did well to come through into 7th but they were well strung out.

LONE EAGLE

Sandown 7 Aug 2020
British EBF Maiden Stakes (Class 5) (Turf)
2yo 1M Winner: £4,140 (8 runners)
Good to Firm

I thought this was a good debut for Lone Eagle. The winner, Recovery Run - who had already run well in a couple of decent all weather events, raced mostly in the lead throughout with Lone Eagle tracking him a length or two adrift. He had to be pushed a bit to hold position some 2 furlongs out and made his effort with Recovery Run inside the final furlong when just over a length adrift. Finished the better to go down by a head in the end with the rest miles away.

LONE EAGLE (1.45pm – Zetland Stakes)

Next up I’m really looking forward to getting back aboard Lone Eagle who bids for his hat-trick in the Zetland Stakes having won his last two. He showed a really willing attitude at Doncaster last time and was well on top in the closing stages. The step up in trip looks sure to suit and I don’t really have any concerns about the ground. This is a step up in class though and he meets some classy colts, but he won’t be far away.....Sylvester

LAST EMPIRE

Beverley 27 August 2020
William Hill Beverley Bullet Sprint Stakes (Listed Race)
5f, Class 1, £17,013
Going: Soft

After winning three on the bounce last year she has been highly tried at Class 1 over 6 furlongs in her four races before this, but without much success. Although this was not a star studded Class 1 she did well at her first try over five furlongs. She was squeezed to the back after the start and raced there or thereabouts until Tudhope got her going with a furlong to go. She moved strongly through the field keeping pace with the winner, although not closing him down at all, to finish second.

She’ll probably continue to struggle in most Class 1 events, but lowering her sights a little might see her back in the winner’s circle.

Won listed event Chantilly today @ 9/4

The Tizzards are expecting great things from Eldorado Allen and he certainly started his chasing career impressively with a good win over the odds on favourite despite a near catastrophic blunder at the last. Other than that stumble he jumped very well and looked the part throughout. I’d be very surprised if he didn’t go on to better things and he’s definitely one to follow.

It seemed that Brian Hughes might be a significant booking, although there was no indication in the market which returned 16/1. He was kept lobbing along in the rear for most of the race and closed up to third very smoothly after the third last. Close up he was clumsy at the second last, continued in good vein but he found no extra and was not bashed about by Brian Hughes when the first two moved away in the final stages. I thought it was a very promising run.

Given his lofty hurdle standing (there are only 6 hurdlers rated higher by Timeform) it seemed that he only had to show that he could jump to run away with this despite the quality of his two opponents. And so it proved, he jumped well, gained confidence in his jumping as the race wore on and won comfortably. He’s going to be very hard to oppose in future and he really is an exciting prospect.

Eclair de Guye moved into the lead after the second out, but Bryony Frost looked unusually unbalanced to my eye, jumped the last awkwardly and didn’t ride much of a finish in going down by a neck with the rest four lengths away. It transpired that her saddle had slipped two out and that certainly couldn’t have helped. It might (or might not since the winner had a bit in hand) have made a difference, but it was still a decent run.

Did it really nicely from the front and had plenty in hand even though he showed his inexperience over the last two and up to the line. There a chance he’s quirky, but races strongly and quite like him...

Yes, he’s come on a ton from the ducking and diving he did first time, but he’s still work in progress I think. Nice win, though.

Ps: Military Mission 4th although I’ve already abandoned the flat.

Keen and leading early on then fell back weaving about as green as grass, rejoined leading group after 5 and took lead 4 out having at last found some rhythm. He was well clear coming to the last only to swerve jump it awkwardly. Despite that he moved strongly away in the run in to win by nearly 5 lengths easing up. He can only get better.

Fergal’s horses seem to have gone off a touch after a purple patch, but Polish almost ran a decent race. He jumped the first as though it was The Chair then settled down in the rear where he stayed until he started improving his position before 4 out where he made a dreadful blunder that had him on his nose and almost stopped. Undeterred he went into third after 3 out and moved to challenged the leaders 2 out where he made another on his nose blunder stopping him in his tracks. None the less he was still in contention at the last and a close third, but he could do no more on the run-in and wasn’t pressed when the game was up. It could have been so much better.

I’d tuned into this race for Sizable Sam whose withdrawal was perhaps judicious given the impressive performance of the winner GRAND MOGUL who raced strongly in the first group until moving clear of the favourite before the last to win very comfortably by some seven lengths easing up. Said to prefer better ground I should think he’s destined for better things.

This was a hot little race. Only three opponents, but a proven Class 1 novice chaser (albeit on his pipe opener run), two highly thought of near debutantes (including Noted In Running horse I K Brunel who did not disgrace himself) only for Shan Blue to treat them with disdain, smashing them into oblivion and jumping in a manner that would befit a seasoned top chaser. If he’s not destined for Class 1 competition I’ll pack it in.

I imagine Nicholls will be very, very happy with Next Destination there. Travelled supremely well all the way through and was foot perfect over his obstacles given his absence.

Will be some 3m chaser.

Going: Good

I doubt that Mr Appleby was overpleased with Master Ladd after the race. How a horse can get into so much trouble in a field of six runners is a bit of a mystery. Slightly slowly away ZIM BABY raced in last place and started moving forward with what looked like a full tank with just over two furlongs left only to be checked to avoid running into the heels of Gale Force Maya. Then, with little more than one furlong left he had to be snatched up, losing momentum and dropping back to last. Got going again, now some six or seven lengths adrift and finished impressively closing all the time to go down by less than two lengths with the rest four lengths away. He hasn’t been setting the world on fire, nor was he particularly well supported here, but he would have surely made a strong winning bid had he avoided the trouble.

Been 2nd since this, but WON 7/2 today 3:10 Nottingham for those that remembered (I didn’t)

Henderson likes setting off his good novice hurdlers at Newbury and Dusart certainly filled the bill. The odds on favourite Soaring Glory set the bar pretty high, but Dusart cleared it with ease. He jumped well, finishing strongly and won going away by a couple of lengths with the rest distant. Very promising, I think.
