Racing Replays

because a specialist publication will have staff largely concentrating on producing something for the following days paper....realistically, in the economic climate that exists, it will be very different for such a publication to sustain a really consistent breaking news element as well. not with the staff levels that are out there at the moment. pure and simple economics, which is what drives most debates of this nature.

To answer Gal's point, I would assume that Sporting Life have a deal with PA. You can't necessarily just use it. PA is a different animal altogether..it has no publication, nothing to work for. It just deals in the business of churning out stuff on a regular basis, to serve clients all over the world.

I agree that Racing Post were too slow with comments though. realistically, on the big days, they should be imitating the guardian/bbc etc with live blogs on the days races peppering in quotes here and there taken from even the television or ripped off other sources.

Anyone got suggestions for trying to dig out 1993 Scottish Grand National? Any help appreciated!

Still remarkable

I remember it most for being the first time, at approaching 18 years of age, that I used the abbreviated form of 'see you next tuesday' in front of people I really shouldn't. I'd had 2 singles and a double on Inchinor in the Greenham and Run For Free in the Scottish National, an incredible race.

Someone has uploaded a vid of the 1986 Arkle onto Youtube. First thought - how one paced did Desert Orchid look in that race. Second - the different camera angles freaked. Me. Out.

A real war of attrition! A great block of a horse. Great engine. If only his jumping could have been more consistent. Jumped some like a god others like a pig. Perhaps the greatest horse never to have stood a chance at Cheltenham.

I can still hear Ted Walsh exclaiming: "Christ! That horse is an ignorant bugger."

I like the extended coverage on this one. There's a few like this on Youtube.

This was before my time in terms of interest in racing, how come some of the horses are numbered in the 40s?

The race card numbers used to be assigned at entry rather than declaration stage. You can see a lot of gaps in the numbering on that list of runners.

"Trained by Martin Pipe, his tenth winner of the season..."

The main point of interest for me here is how much of the coverage Oaksey carries compared to the plethora of pundits Channel 4 have now.

Remember the race well-had a tooth out 20 minutes before the race and made a sprint to my grandmothers house to watch the race.An Uncle of mine backed Teenoso and roared him home -for years after I thought he was a shrewdie but the reality was he backed tips and favourites like the majority of betting shop punters.

Doesn't get any better for excitement than this if you were on this winner.

I'd really lie to see David Baron's Bootlaces and Paul Leach winning the Schweppes Gold Trophy in 1980 if anyone has it???

Didn't back Bootlaces I backed Fred Winters Snowtown Boy with John Francome on board for weeks on end Ante Post but would still love to see it again

Steering job for Lester - we were on holiday in Yorkshire at half term and watched it on an old B and W TV in a self catering cottage - there had been a big storm the night before and the ground was very soft . Still think the other jockeys were surprised he kicked so far out .

Sangster I recall did not take race well and stated that Teenoso won only because of the storm - Teenoso had the last laugh a year later running Sangster's Sadler's Wells into the ground in a fast ground King George .

If I recall correctly when Sangster was interviewed after the race he said that it was such a tough race that none of the principals would be winning for the rest of the summer.
He must have been driven to the depths of despair with the way things turned out with Sadlers Wells.

Sangster was correct; none of the principals did win a race bar Salmon Leap the Whitehall Stakes in 1983.
As for Sadlers Wells, they had El Gran Senor valued at $80 million had he won the Derby in 84 so after his defeat anything else was small beer for the year.

Sadlers Wells made Coolmore what it is today -a goldmine on legs.

Yes of course he did but Sangster was wholly wrong to belittle what Teenoso had achieved and as I recall a very cross Harry Wragg was interviewed about it a few days after. I have little doubt he would have won the Arc in 1984 had he not gone wrong the Friday before the race .

Totally agree Luke but 1984 was the year El Gran Senor lost the Derby as far as Coolmore were concerned.
Teenoso did not have a sexy sire line so was of little interest to Coolmore.
Reading Horsetrader I think Sangster was more human and generous of spirit than he got credit for; remember he gave connections of Soba the chance to breed with Golden Fleece on a foal share basis ;( how much of the 400K they got when the yearling was sold I do not know.)
I realise he came across as arrogant in interviews which did not endear him to me either at the time.

Was there some sort of shortage of pro jockeys in this time? Half the field seemed to be carrying overweight.

Part of the reason for me that flat racing was clearly the better sport until the 00s was basically because until that time the jumps was just dossing about.

Had a look on Wiki, and most of the field were set to carry 10 stone. Clearly, plenty jocks couldn't do that weight - probably same applies today, but is masked by massaging of weights and higher quality entry?

Flat racing ain't changed - your aspirations have lowered. :)
