Road to the Gold Cup 2012

Couldn't argue with that either but he also won two King Georges and a number of other grade 1 chases. He was a quality chaser. Also the first GC winner i backed!!!

He's a different sort of horse, as I've said ("What he may lack in turn of foot he makes up for with relentless toughness"), but that doesn't mean he couldn't be as good in his way. In fact, as a Gold Cup horse he may be every bit as good.

I'll go back to my original point and say unless its Soft/Heavy I don't think he'll be in the mix jumping the second last.

The Kicking King sort of horse is the type that wins GC's these days.

I’d disagree with this. I’d say that Quito is closer to Denman, Imperial Commander and Long Run, as a type, than Kicking King was. Quito is a proper Gold Cup horse, KK was more of a KG type.

Ability rather than 'type' is the key factor in winning a Gold Cup. That is where Quito De La Roque is likely to fall short I think.

You may of course well be right about that, but he has a better chance than many and it is certainly the race they ought to be thinking about. I expect him to progress well.

IC and Long Run were completely different types to Denman...

They're all different (and more than just gallopers, as I've said), but I would put them closer to Denman than Kicking King.

If we wanted to be simplistic about it, as blue prints we’d be looking for a Ferrari for the Champion Chase, an Aston Martin for the King George and something between a Rolls-Royce and a Land Rover for the Gold Cup. I’d say Quito falls into this latter category (perhaps more Land Rover than Rolls-Royce though).

I always liked the idea of West Tip running in the Gold Cup. He never won admittedly but he ran some brave races. Quito has something of the West Tip about him.

Have you taken fancy prices for QDLR (lets not use the 'Quito' moniker as that was a horse with some pace) for the Arc yet? :)

i like the car comparison..but would put Quito = Hearse

but if he's just like West Tip how will he win a GC?

I said something/much like (they are of course different individuals). I also didn't say that Quito would win, just that connections should be thinking about the race as he is a proper Gold Cup horse (i.e. one entitled to take part).

I've backed Long Run at 5/2 and Denman at 25/1. I wouldn't rule out a bet on Quito but it will depend on who's taking part nearer the time.

would think so..was just saying showed strong signs a real trip is necessary

will get run off feet in a GC
Horses that need 3m 2f+, testing ground and G1 contests?

I think Grassy knows where they should be running ;)
