The Bumpers Thread

CLONDAW COURT having his first run under rules, he won his only point-to-point race, was long odds-on and highly impressive at Puncheston yesterday. Looks to have the size and scope to be winning over obstacles.

At Uttoxeter UP AND GO was just as short but not quite as impressive, although winning well enough. Another making his rules debut after success in the Irish point-to-point field.

DEFY LOGIC, whose only previous run was a close second to Sizing Gold at Navan in February, destroyed the opposition in what appeared to be a decent bumper at Fairyhouse yesterday. Racing prominently throughout the son of Flemensfirth pulled right away in the closing stages to win by 35 lengths.

His connections are quoted in the RP: James Nolan, assistant to Paul Nolan, trainer of Defy Logic: "We´ve done plenty of talking abouthim and it´s nice to be proved right. He has a lot of galloping to do before he proves himself to be the horse we believe in. His jumping makes him extra special to look forward to. I´d imagine we´ll go to Leopardstown for a maiden hurdle."

Quite taken with the Paul Nicholls French import VAROM at Haydock yesterday. A winner of his only race on the French provincial circuit this grey gelding looks to have the size to move on to a sucessful career over obstacles. He was slightly outpaced here but kept on well to finish third, beaten 2.5 lengths.

Probably not a great bumper at Uttoxeter but the winner, HERONSHAW, did well to overcome greenness and having looked beaten over a furlong out ran on well to win with something in reserve.

Here's the trainer's comments post race from the RP site:

QUOTES: Henry Daly, trainer of Heronshaw: "He´s a huge raw boned brute who will only improve. He´s schooled over hurdles and I think he will go over them next."

Puffin Billy could be the best we've seen so far Colin - never came off the bridle in winning impressively.

Puffin Billy makes his hurdle debut at Newbury this afternoon. I have had what is quite a large bet for me as I think he could be something special.

At Doncaster yesterday RED DEVIL BOYS, trained by 'bumper specialist' John Ferguson, was sent off a strong favourite after a promising British debut when finishing second over this course in December 2011.

After stumbling and almost coming down half a mile out he soon recovered and took the lead on the bit two out and ran out an easy winner.

OWEN MC followed up his impressive debut win at Fairyhouse last month with another win at the same course yesterday. He was made to work more for this victory by Dantes Firth who had won his previous race at Thurles in March.

One of those "Junior" bumpers at Towcester which was won by SHIPTON, a flat bred 3-y-o by Nayef out of a Dansili mare. He is a big unit and did well to overcome greenness to take this.

Nice debut performance by CARLTON JACK at Catterick. Trained by Michael Easterby didn't seem to be strongly fancied at 16/1 but always travelled comfortably in midfield and then surged clear in the straight. Has the size and scope to go on from this and one to keep an eye on.

Ever since Alleged won the Royal Whip on debut as the outsider of three Vincent O'Brien runners in the race, at odds of 33/1, I've always liked to keep an eye on horses who exceed expectations on their first visit to a racecourse. It sometimes turns out that they have won because the race was rubbish, but other times it can be the sign of a horse saving itself for when it matters most.

Trouble is Grey, it wasnt Alleged's debut that day but his third race if memory serves. Lady Capulet won Irish 1000 Gns on her debut that night but did not win subsequently for MVOB. Marinsky also beaten at 1/7, Fri May 13 1977.
Point taken though.

Alan Potts seems to have another nice horse in SIZING TENNESSEE winner of the bumper at Punchestown yesterday. Making his seasonal debut, previously second at Fairyhouse in April, he won galloping away from his field in the straight. His style of racing suggests he might appreciate further than two miles.

JP, Jonjo and AP look to have a nice recruit in DON'T BE LATE, runner up at Warwick yesterday, he made the well-supported favourite fight to the finish, possibly only beaten by that horse's benefit of experience.

Nice debut by the unfancied KICK ON BOSS at Gowran yesterday despite tiring close home he won well enough and has the size for jumping.

The finish at Taunton was fought out by two offspring of Presenting; the winner the strongly fancied Pipe-trained gelding DOCTOR HARPER, the runner-up a filly and 33/1 shot AUGUST HILL. Both were making their debuts and both look to have a future in jumping.

Bumper form to follow I reckon. The first has PTP form in Ireland where he split Sizing Rio and Clondaw Kaempfer. The McManus horse looked green and McCoy wasn't hard on him and the first two pulled well clear of some other promising types. Both look decent horses to me.

Hot bumper at Fairyhouse tomorrow with Isle View running well in a winners bumper FTO up at Down Royal last month. City Slicker was highly touted prior to his debut for powerful connections whilst I'm a big fan of a pointer called Adamstown who beat non other than Clondaw Kaempfer FTO in a 4yo Maiden last season, he's since tackled older horses in winners races but is a big horse and looked weak to my eye at Maralin on his return so could well appreciate the drop in trip at this stage of his career. One to keep an eye on with the very promising Willie Thompson taking the ride.

I thought he was done no favours by Ned Buntline went past possibly just nudging him out of a stride.

Certainly created a good impression yesterday appearing to show a nice turn of foot inside the final furlong.

Spot on Colin - really impressive yesterday against some likeable horses.

Another decent bumper in Ireland today - Champagne James is meant to be G1 material so will be disappointing if he isn't winning this today.
