The Bumpers Thread

RADICAL IMPACT a full-brother to Cooldine and Fists Of Fury makes his racecourse debut at Fontwell today.

Here's the Spotlight comment from the RP for him:

41,000euro purchase; yard just 3-54 with bumper newcomers since January 2007 but those to start shorter than 3-1 in same period have recorded figures of 3331213231 and market will tell the story.

Maybe it's not the right question to ask, because trainers have different methods, but what price would this horse be if coming from a yard with a bigger reputation in bumpers?

I think he's worth a speculative bet at the 8/1 that's available at the moment from WH, mainly because the front two in the betting are not the types on pedigree to normally be winning bumpers, very respectable though their point form happens to be. On the other hand, at 2m3f this is not a normal bumper, so caution is required.

By the way, the spotlight comments for this race are by Andrew Mount, who delights in coming up with interesting stats. Venetia Williams is 7 from 65 in bumpers during the period in question, so another way of reading his stat is that she is 4 from 11 in bumpers with horses that have had a previous run. Basically, her horses only get more than one run in a bumper if they have a serious chance of winning. Something worth bearing in mind for future reference.

Not a lot of promise there.

Too kind. The horse struggled to raise a gallop throughout and looked totally clueless. Perhaps the trainer is looking towards a nice handicap mark....in about six years time. You can understand why she doesn't get many big money purchases.

With Jezki franking the form of their bumper in an earlier race it wasn't that much of a surprise to see NED BUNTLINE (started @ 1/3) being heavily supported for the last at Naas yesterday.

He won in the style of a long odds-on shot, always travelling well and hardly coming off the bit.

At somewhat of a lesser level there was an eye-catching debut by the unfancied MONKSGOLD (66/1) at Wincanton. Always travelling comfortably in midfield got left behind when the pace quickened inside the final two furlongs but ran on well late on to claim third place.

Agree with you on Monksgold Colin - very eyecatching.

Champagne James is meant to be something special in the last at Navan today for Ted Walsh with Robbie McNamara riding.

Why was Katie not riding that horse? She was there. Unusual for Robbie Mac to be riding for that combination.

Hope it wasn't too serious for her.

If anyone is at the Brightwells breeze up sale on Friday night at Cheltenham look out for a horse of Eoin Doyle's called Champagne West - that's another who's meant to be top quality, bolted up in his Maiden at Loughanmore on Saturday.

Yeah Ut de Sivola in the HRI calendar notices this week.

On a related point, does anyone know the well being of Un Atout and Samain. I was thinking of putting one of them in a twelve to follow comp. Might pick up a few races during the season.

Probably not a strong event at Huntingdon yesterday but the debutant CHRIS PEA GREEN showed an impressive turn of foot to go clear and win by 17 lengths.

Only a mares' Polytrack bumper at Lingfield but the winner PEPELINA showed a nice turn of foot inside the last. Spectacular performance by Just Popsy in this, looked to have been sent to the wrong venue when putting on a rodeo show at the start and giving the field around a 100 yards start, surprisingly managed 7th. place beaten 14 lengths.

Keep an eye out for Tiqris now with Philip Hobbs if he goes in the bumper at Cheltenham on Sunday - serious tool and I did a lengthy post on him when he made his rules debut at Chepstow back in April which he should have won.

Thanks for the thumbs up,Irish Stamp.

Will you be entering my Principal Races Tipping Contest ?
