The criminal justice system in this country has many faults but having a jury hear and sift through all the evidence, explaining to said jury the law in relation to the different verdicts open to them and leaving them to make up their minds isn't one of them. They heard the evidence, they saw the witnesses and they had the option of convicting of murder. After very long deliberations, they didn't do so. I'm inclined to respect their decision.

I think the US concept of culpable homicide, mentioned by Krizon, is interesting though. Does anyone know what the arguments might be against introducing it as a category into British law (and Irish law for that matter, given that it derives from the same origins?)
