Venusian, or any other breeding buff on here, why has DARK ANGEL been so popular in his first year at stud?

I can see that he was likely to get precocious fast youngsters but is there something in his breeding that also makes him attractive?

Surely the fact that he never raced after his 2-y-o season is something of a negative?

The Barry Hills-trained Dark Angel (Acclamation - Midnight Angel, by Machiavellian), the winner of the Group One Middle Park Stakes ad the Group Two Mill Reef Stakes, will not race as a three year old, having been purchased to stand at Morristown Lattin Stud in Ireland. No fee has yet been announced.

Explaining the rationale for the sale, joint owner Catherine Corbett told the Racing Post: "He wouldn't have run in a Classic next year. It was felt he would be a six-furlong specialist and it's very hard for a three-year-old who has won a Group One, so selling him wasn't really a wrench."

Morristown Lattin Stud said: "Dark Angel is very much in the mould of his champion sire Acclamation, who also won the DBS sales race.

"But Dark Angel went on to outperform Acclamation by winning at Group One and Two level, emulating his grandsire Royal Applause.

"Physically, he is very mature and has excellent conformation, having been the second highest-priced yearling from Acclamation's 2005 crop."

Everyone loves a fast 2-y-o, especially one as good-looking and well-made as Dark Angel.

He doesn't possess an exceptional pedigree, although his sire, Acclamation has made quite a start as a stallion. His female line is nothing particularly special.

But, Dark Angel was very much a "made" 2-y-o, his stock seem cast in the same mould, and he's clearly passing on plenty of ability. No doubt he'll be a fixture in the 2-y-o sires lists for many years to come. The fact that he seems to throw lookers may have encouraged breeders not to desert him after his first season at stud, so there's every chance he won't just be a "first crop wonder".

As for not racing as a 3-y-o, whilst most regrettable, it wouldn't be a big negative for breeders looking to breed fast, early 2-y-os. I don't believe Raise A Native and Hail To Reason, admittedly better racehorses than Dark Angel, didn't suffer from lack of patronage in their early years at stud.

MILK IT MICK, winner of the Dewhurst when trained by Jamie Osborne and later a Group 1 winner as a 5-y-o in America, has his first runner this evening, at Haydock 6.35, with MAN OF MY WORD trained by David Nicholls.

My two fancies were Dutch Art and Teofilo, although I seem to have backed the former at 11/2 and bizarrely Sir Percy at 50/1. Teofilo mustn't have been a decent price (can't find prices on this thread, must have been elsewhere).
