17 January 2009 05:21
Today
Becoming very windy or stormy today, with gusts to 100 - 120 km/h in exposed areas (and possibly to even higher levels later in the northwest). A dry, bright start for most parts, with just a few isolated showers - then, heavy rain sweeping in from the Atlantic during the morning and afternoon, with clearer showery weather following later. Highest temperatures 7 to 10 C.
Tonight
Severe winds easing later today and early tonight - but remaining fairly windy and blustery overall through the night, and turning a good deal colder too, with widespread heavy or thundery showers - these giving falls of snow on mountains (and possibly locally at lower levels as well). Frost in places, with a risk of icy roads. Lowest temperatures - 1 to + 3 C.
Tomorrow
Very windy again, with severe gusts or squalls in places - and remaining very cold, with further widespread heavy showers, and a continuing risk of snow (mainly on mountains). Highest temperatures 3 to 7 C.
3 Day Outlook
The cold wintry weather will continue over the first half of next week, with no rise in temperatures until after midweek. Rain or showers on Sunday night may turn to snow over more northern counties. Monday and Tuesday will be cold windy days with highest daytime temperatures only around 5 or 6C and frost at night. The wind direction will be westerly and this will blow a lot of showers in off the cold Atlantic. The showers will be very frequent over the west, north and southwest of the country, but the eastern side of Ireland will not be as badly affected by them. And in the low temperatures, the showers will contain a wintry mix with snow on the higher ground and at times too lower down. The showers will largely die out on Wednesday although it will still be a cold day. The second half of next week looks unsettled.
