    Arse Cup

For some reason, Dave Nevison now seems to believe it is acceptable for a RacingUK pundit to abandon proper form analysis in favour of trotting out meaningless "stats" all afternoon. I don't think I can take much more of it.

Two good things today, both at Market Rasen... 3.00 Calusa Star - did really well to claim second when held up off a slow pace at Uttoxeter last time. 4.30 Keltic Rhythm - kicked for home too soon in a strongly run race when third at Fontwell last time.

I found the closing stages very distressing. The horse is evidently a tricky customer but the handicapper can't reallly touch him after today, and he'll probably make amends if he gets a lead for longer next time.

Butney Boy (4.35 Perth tomorrow). He's simply a much better horse than all the others and gave a pretty good account in a very competitive race last time. 7/2 available in a place.

If you can get on with Bet365, Kings Grey at 7-1 (5.40 Southwell tomorrow) is a significant error.

    Tidal Bay

Not true. They were only going slightly slower than you'd expect at the end of 3m on soft to heavy ground. I think it's obvious that Tidal Bay has got slower with age and now needs an extreme stamina test. He didn't get that yesterday. I'd give him a realistic each-way shout in The Gold Cup...

    An experiment in honesty

Is it just coincidence that the Gordon Elliott team trains a horse named after a song by "The Stranglers"?

    Cleeve Hurdle

Knockara Beau is indeed a very strong stayer and when I listened to the race on the radio in the car, I quickly jumped to the conclusion he must have outstayed exhausted rivals in a gruelling contest. To me, that was the only scenario in which I could have imagined him winning. However, the...

    handicap plots 13/14

Burton Port probably isn't the force of old and his current mark (158) makes him hard to place at the moment but, after a quiet winter, I reckon he might "rediscover some form" in a Cheltenham Festival handicap, by which time he'll probably be rated in the low 140s.

    What are you backing Today?

From my experience, Jeremy Scott tends to be very patient with his horses and I reckon the market drift on Melodic Rendezvous stems from a suspicion he won't be given too hard a time today. I'm only guessing, though.

    Nicholls jockeys

I don't think so but I imagine he's keen to maintain his partnership with Melodic Rendezvous and presumably has Paul Nicholls' blessing to do so today.
