    Cheltenham Gold Cup 2015

My first post for a whole year – since last year’s oh-so-mediocre renewal. Has just brought an enormous smile to my face. The Riccis, O’Learys and McManuses can throw their bucketloads at the sport but this is special. Never cheered a horse home so loud in a race in which I didn’t have a bet.

Road to the 2014 Cheltenham Gold Cup

I only brought up the DR 5lb allowance as Wayward Lad is my all-time favourite horse and the ‘legend’ of DR allows him to be wiped from the memory – ‘The mare’s gonna get up …’. 3m 2½fur plus a hill finish always pushed WL to his limits but he was some Rolls-Royce of a three-miler. Regarding the...

Road to the 2014 Cheltenham Gold Cup

WL lost because Dawn Run got 5lb.

Road to the 2014 Cheltenham Gold Cup

Totally agree re Norton's Coin. Poorest or should we say 'weirdest' Gold Cup for years. The two market principals (with all the proven Grade 1 form) go to the last to decide it and suddenly three outsiders whoosh bye as if they've joined in at the last fence.

    The French Champion Hurdle

Thought Nicholls said a few years back that he wouldn't entertain running his horses on the attritional ground served up by Auteuil on a regular basis. Obviously changed his tune.

Has finians reached the end of the line?

They didn't run FR in this race last year. Riverside Theatre won it. FR was beaten by Somersby over TWO miles before going on to be 2 mile champion.

    Friday Banker Bet

Yes, topcat, I agree. A horse to be followed this season.

    1000 Guineas Thread

Sense of Joy injured and misses Guineas. Glad I don't bet ante-post. Always best to see what turns up on the day.

    Summer Championships

Andrew, I take your point about Cesare. At 7 he's hardly open to much improvement but twice last year he finished 1 and 1/4 lengths behind Ramonti which is the best mile form there is and there's no Ramonti in the race, hence the 6/1. Early days but I'll put up Fleeting Spirit 14s for the K...

    Dream Alliance

Just like to add to the sentiments already expressed. Hope he's able to have a decent retirement.

    1000 Guineas Thread

I liked the look of Sense of Joy's Goodwood performance at the time in a slowly run race and in time she will probably need further but she'll do for me at the moment.

    Master Minded

Yes, great calls form Andrew and Luke. Do I recall Paul Nicholls saying straight after Cheltenham that MM is so fast he would stay at 2m for forseeable future (and why not aim for 3 or 4 Champion chases and a string of Tingle Creeks) but I suppose he's not the first to succumb to the lure of the...

    Aintree Thursday

I wonder if it is worth looking at this from the French-bred angle. For many years it was thought that as they are jumping and winning from such an early age then how long do they last. I know there were the exceptions who went on and on like Sabin Du Loir & have just checked KS's record. He's...

    Aintree Thursday

Yes, a sad sight but a very strange race. Nicholls is accepting the blame for the unusual tactics and Walsh looked gutted after the post. Why force the pace with a circuit to go when you're on a horse who wins Tingle Creeks for fun especially after a gruelling Gold Cup a few weeks earlier...

New Members- Welcome To Talking Horses

Yes, they were American. They bought Mumuqa and sent him north. My name's Mike. I used to come down for a stable visit on a Saturday morning every month or two. I think Mick was looking after Mumuqa at the time.

New Members- Welcome To Talking Horses

Yes. I was a 1/4 share owner when he was at Egerton's. Experienced two novice chase wins in September '99. :D Never forget his 13l win after a memorable trip up to Sedgefield. Norman said at Sedgefield that he just had to let him go and hope to stay on board. Only got five runs in 2 years -...

Yes Shadow Leader!! I did own a leg 7 or 8 years ago. At what of his career were you associated with him?

    Diamond Tycoon

Was at a very wet Kempton yesterday and was looking forward to seeing DT. In the end had a small bet on Kandidate who seemed to tick all the required boxes. Paddock inspection revealed DT to be bandaged hinds and he was very free to post. Callan got tactics spot on jumping out the gate and...

New Members- Welcome To Talking Horses

Hi Just stumbled across the website this evening so thought I'd join. My father took me to the 1967 Derby (Royal Palace) and for Nijinsky three years later and, as they say, the rest is history. Over the following decades my preference for Flat or NH has fluctuated. 10/15 years ago lost all...
