The Gordy Elliott Horror Picture Show

I’m sure the bbc arent trying to drop hints here... https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/horse-racing/56230013 Work hard, play hard. A clip of an exuberant Elliott and Russell serenading Tiger Roll in his stable went viral after the pair sang the 'eye of the tiger' chorus from Katy Perry's song Roar...

    The 2021 Grand National

The sprinting analogy was for humans I think? We don’t really have ‘sprinting’ races for horses despite what we call a 5f race. A sprint for a horse would be 1-2f.

    Racing TV - technical issues

10 down / 1 up might not be the most amazing speeds but it should be more than sufficient for hdtv. I have similarly poor speeds and can play all the major services acceptably, iPlayer etc, and even odd balls like Eurosport. I've had exactly the same experience with Racing TV as you. I can't...

    In Memoriam (Racing People)

I found a nice film about him from 2015 here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m617rPispXA

    Meeting Claude Duval

Fantastic stuff, really enjoying these interviews Simon.

Racing will ultimately be banned in the UK?

It won't take that much - but yes a repeat of Many Clouds, but at Aintree, and it's done for. We've had a few years now of no death nationals, and each year there's pats on the backs and "safest grand national ever". When the inevitable happens, especially if it's 2 or 3 in the same year, then...

Betfair Hurdle Sat Feb 16th Ascot

foot and mouth, November 1967, shut down two months and even longer in some areas. June 68 all clear. Massey Ferguson and king George lost. Think that was the only shutdown until 2001. edit: the Massey Ferguson was held on a ‘Transistor Track’ ;) https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Sp_ndcKNZHM

Equine Retirements, Long Term Injuries and Departures

How lucky were we that when Kauto Star came along, so too did Denman, and each of them could demonstrate how brilliant the other one was? A golden era, I miss them both. Farewell old boy.

    Meeting John McCririck

Good interviews. It's a change to see him speaking reflectively without the old shouting and grandstanding [no pun intended] (although there's still plenty of flashes of it). Sad to see him decline so quickly but very interesting interviews.

The Road to the Grand National 2018

I think they said three (? or was it two) went at Bechers - in the old days they would give a list of departures at each fence. [Edit: Stewart Machin called Virgillio and Houblon des obeux along with I Just Know at Becher's].

The Road to the Grand National 2018

No I meant the replay sharply cut away from the replay of bechers first time. Obviously hiding the falls but if the horses were ok and the jockey was ok I can't see the problem. Anyhoo.

The Road to the Grand National 2018

They're hiding something that happened at bechers on the replay. They've claimed all the horses are back with saint are being assessed. Go figure?!?!

    TV coverage

Hoiles is one of the very best, but I'm very very sad that Holt won't be the lead commentator. He's peerless and for me, the best since Po'S, in fact I think he's even better.

    The 2016 Grand National

How so? He was retained by Highflyer until their contract ended wasn't he?

    The 2016 Grand National

It's easier for them all then. Actually, I can't get my head around how a maiden chaser even qualified. (I know the rules, but looking at the form and the ratings, this looks to my untrained eye like a real edge case - fair play). Edit to add, I had forgotten all about the Irish National from 2015.

    The 2016 Grand National

That's racing. Boo. Can't get my head around how a maiden (chaser) has won the Grand National.

    The 2016 Grand National

Why not, if they've completed the course and sound. I sure wouldn't be pulling up after jumping the last.

    The 2016 Grand National

What price abandoned? I don't think they'd go ahead these days if the conditions were as 2001. (I'm not very serious).

    Aintree 2016

This is why I roll my eyes when people claim the national is safer than ever - as soon as this happens on Grand National day itself, and it will, inevitably, there's going to be huge trouble.
